settling in

It is hard to believe that it has been over 6 weeks since we first had the opportunity to meet our little boy. It is one of those cases where time seems to have flown by, and yet, also stand still.

Was it hard living out of a hotel in Oklahoma with a newborn for 5 weeks with the uncertainty of the adoption process being held over our heads? Yes, of course it had it challenges and it had its tears but at the end of the day it was also a very rewarding experience.

Not many new parents have the chance to spend the first month of their child’s life bonding one-on-one like we did. Real life didn’t seem to exist. There was no housework (housecleaning even made our bed). There were no groceries to shop for or dinners to make (even though we did get tired of eating out each and every meal). There were no jobs, no bills, no schedules. We got to just be - be the new family that we were - on our own terms.

When the time came to come home though we were definitely ready. We were so ready that we had our bags packed and were heading towards the airport just in case. The phone call we had waited 5 weeks for finally came we were on the next flight home. There were welcome home celebrations, visits from friends and family, and there was also real life.

We are learning to adjust to our new family all over again here in the real world. A world where there is housework, bills to pay, and schedules to abide by. A world where we both have to go back to work. Life here seems more challenging then life in Oklahoma but we are learning to adjust and are settling back in.

Even though all of those things seem daunting and the to-do lists are growing, I just need to remember that this new reality also includes Logan. It is a world with soft pudgy cheeks, late night snuggles, and little almost smiles. It is a world of firsts that we now have the opportunity to experience every day with our son.
