Packing for Six Months + Your Most Asked Question

Since moving to Denmark, my wardrobe has gone through a massive transformation. Many people who have met me in the last couple years find it hard to believe that I ever wore a jilaba or long, baggy clothes, but I have tried to adapt to the new culture we are in and have really found a lot of joy in my new freedom to dress like a Western City Mom. But now that we are about to be on the move again, I have been a little stressed out because packing for six months is just a bit strange. We are taking a maximum of one bag each back to the US and that has to cover both summer and winter.

It has really made me think through what is important in my wardrobe and how versatility can really extend the value of a piece. My Danish friends have rubbed off on me and I have a lot of black and grey in my closet with bits of pinks and whites mixed in, which helps a lot because everything coordinates well with each other.

But right now I am really thinking through each piece and everything that will be going into my suitcase has to meet these criteria: Is it versatile? Do I love it? Will I get enough wear out of it to warrant bringing it?

If I take only what is hanging up on my clothes rack, then packing for six months will be a breeze, which actually leads me to one of the most asked questions I ever get… Are those really all of your clothes hanging there? The answer to that question is hiding behind door number one…

Do you really want to see inside my other closet? I’m guessing there are at least one or two of you are saying yes? Let’s have a little peek, shall we?…

Ummm… yes, I am actually opening my closet up for just anyone to see. Suddenly that seems a bit silly, but this is the rest of my wardrobe in here. Or at least everything currently in season. My heavy winter sweaters are in baskets above and my fuzzy slipper socks are carefully hidden away… because even I’m not ready to show those off!

As you can see, I love to tape up inspiration to keep me feeling energized and creative every day…

And I try to keep things tidy because somehow grabbing out a pair of black lace panties from a big, messy pile is nowhere near as luxurious as pulling them from a neat little stack. That is one luxury that we can all afford!

My husband, who was not quite so keen on the idea of my opening his closet, does not necessarily ascribe to that belief. He pretty much throws everything in here and after fifteen years of nagging and organizing his closet, I just let him have it his own way. That is also why we have separate closets… it’s much cheaper than marital counseling! He has actually lost about 30 lbs since we moved to Denmark, so we are currently weeding out the clothing that no longer fits him… and a few things that may not match his style anymore. :-)

But honestly, I think I would rather take a nap that clean out his closet again. I think he would be perfectly happy to take a couple shirts in a bag and buy everything new in the US! I guess I wouldn’t mind that too much either. Shopping spree anyone?

Now, if you are packing for six months, there is more to think about than just clothes… there are also hats and shoes… which I will need at least another suitcase or two for…

I hope you enjoyed the little tour today! What would you put in your suitcase if you were packing for six months?
