Cannes

In my younger days I used to summer in our lemon coloured house in Cannes completely oblivious to the town's fleshpot reputation.
Like many of the towns strung along the Côte d'Azur, when the clouds darken overhead it can have a slightly grubby, down at heel feel. Sunshine will always bleach out the dark spots though and when it comes to wattage, movie stars can eclipse even the sun which is why Cannes is never as glamorous as it is during the next fortnight when the film festival touches down.
It's a small town that has seen everything, scantily clad starlets posing on the shingle beach, pet panthers in scintillating Cartier collars being taken for a morning stroll along the Croisette, lavish ball gowns and red carpets studded with the bold and the beautiful or perhaps, if truth be told, the good, bad and the ugly. This year's festival opens with Nicole Kidman channeling the spirit of Her Serene Highness, Princess Grace of Monaco but the film which I'm most interested in seeing is David Cronenberg's, Map To The Stars - a highball of dysfunctional Hollywood and crazy actresses.

Somerset Maugham said the Côte d'Azur was a 'sunny place for shady people' - a role Cannes is perfect to play.
