“Almost Human” Recap: “Distrupt”

It’s been two days since I’ve seen the latest Almost Human episode, and I hate that I didn’t get my recap up when everything was still fresh on my mind. But I think we’re getting into some serious world-building here.

Of course, we’ve already got the mystery of the Wall and Kennex still having to track down Anna with the little memory of her and the botched raid he’s got, but now we’ve got something to worry about that’s even more dangerous than Kennex frying his brain at the Recollectionist. Dorian’s got some human memories.

As to how he got these memories is a big conundrum, and as to how he can feel them is another thing entirely. I’m already working through some theories, but they are all coming up nil. If you’ve got some theories, talk about them in the comments section! But one thing could be that, perhaps. Dr. Vaughn implanted some of his own childhood memories into Dorian. Perhaps, since Dr. Vaughn said that he thought of each of his DRNs like his own son, maybe he put a little bit of his own mind into his creations in order to make them a little bit more human. Perhaps these memories are what made all the DRNs go insane (i.e. act humanly) in the first place. Perhaps Dorian’s in a lot more danger than we think. Just a theory.

As far as technology that doesn’t think, it was fun to see SAM and Dorian interact, even if it was just simple questioning. I love/get weirded out by Dorian interacting with other technology. It’s visual and aural insanity. It just goes to show what I said before–Dorian is not a human, for sure, but he’s not completely a machine, either. He’s a freak. He’s a Frankenstein’s monster of a technological marvel/atrocity. Yeah, I said “atrocity.” DRNs basically put humans out of business. Just as easy as it is to love Dorian and want to protect him and provide for him, it’s also too easy to hate him and what he represents as far as the state of humanity is concerned. With machines like DRNs, the world will have to get to a place where there these types of androids have legal standing because of their ability to think, reason, and make actions based on their own opinions. Would America–even a futuristic America–even want to deal with that?

For instance, Dorian was mad at Rudy for rooting around in his head. Technically, Dorian is police department property, so Rudy can root around as long as he likes. But Dorian feels his head is his own and doesn’t want someone up in his private space. An MX wouldn’t be able to care about Rudy messing about in its head because it can’t think and it can’t get mad.

Finally, no, the Almost Husbands didn’t move in together. It was a toss-up, since we had the storyline with Rudy and Dorian pulling one way and Kennex’s gloating about living alone pulling in another. But I bet you that they will eventually.

That’s about it for my recap. I wish Valerie had a better fake wig and that we got to see more of her and Kennex in costume. I wish the rave had been real. It would have been awesome to see them try to traverse the horrifying, exhilarating landscape of a rave (as if I’ve been to one). The fact that there are folks that dress up just to get to a virtual party is kind of…lame. That’s not a pass of judgement on the writing necessarily; it’s more of a pass of judgement on the virtual party-goers. Why do it? You aren’t even seeing someone through a computer camera.

Anyways, what did you think of this episode? Give your opinions in the comments section below!
