Selfridges Beauty Project (Manchester) No. 2: Jo Malone Beauty with Calm & Collected!

In a very exciting collaboration between the exquisite Jo Malone and the creative force that is Calm & Collected, comes a collection hand printed, one of a kind fragrances, boxes and bag. Calm & Collected are a team of four artists who create fun, irreverent and beautiful designs. They were approached by Jo Malone for this project of making over 5 much loved scents and creating screen printed boxes and bags for their customers.

I went along to an event in Manchester to get a clearer idea of how everything worked. I had a good nosey at the boys’ inspiration boards…I noticed some key words…botanical…floral…

I adore the prints. It’s the perfect mix of modern, fresh but also elegant and fun. Each bottle has a print that is specific to the fragrance.

The 5 Fragrances included in this collection are:

Lime Basil & Mandarin, Earl Grey and Cucumber, Pomegrante Noir, English Pear and Freesia and Peony and Blush Suede.

As you can see each bottle has a specific design which I love! The bottles will come in both 100ml and 30ml sizes for those of you who prefer something smaller.

More inspiration;

Now some figures – each box is unique and there will be 1200 in total (each box has a number in the lid and is signed by the artist). You don’t necessarily have to go to an event to get a screen printed box, there will be pre-printed ones too but it is really quite fun seeing your own box being printed!

The studio area! Pots of paint naturally – the boys are very friendly and you can choose your box and of course tell them what kind of colours you prefer (green for me!).

So first I picked my base box! The print you see below is the base that has been pre-screen printed, and the outline is added in front of you.

I went for this pastel-sweet combination. The lid is placed on a plate..ok a wooden block thing…and then some test papers are done to make sure everything lines up correctly!

The paint is put on the top of the screen print ready to be applied (or spread?!).

Then with skillz, the paint is pulled over the screen. This is the moment when you know if you have messed up or created a beautiful piece of art!

After the painting if all is well, the masking tape is removed from the box…

And there is my box. Isn’t it beautiful! If I don’t say so myself!!!!!!!

And my bag which is a beautiful mix of orange tones. The fragrance I took home was English Pear and Freesia, which is a totally new scent to me but really fresh and lovely.

The perfumes cost £82 for 100ml or £41 for 30ml.

There will be 15 dates altogether from the 1st of May – 15th June during the Beauty project where Calm & Collected will set up their live studio.
