Saving my Sensitive Skin: Hada labo ES skincare Review

My skin did a super super big flip out recently (I blame pregnancy and stress) and I had extremely sandpapery rough red dry patches on my cheeks that stung intensely with a lot of skincare products and a LOT of redness. It was just so uncomfortable and I didn’t know what to use.

Then I remembered I had purchased some Hada Labo skincare yonks ago, back in the days when sensitivity was on my mind (yet I never got round to even opening these products). Tired of having skin that hurt, I cracked open these three products – the ES Foam Cleanser, Lotion and ES Milk:

Hada Labo is a strong skincare line from Japan, and are particularly well known for their more acidic AHA/BHA lines. The ES range is small – there are only 4 products in it (the make up remover seems to have been discontinued), the three I have above plus a moisturising cream (which I wish I had because of my dry skin!).

But to be clear – the middle product, the Lotion is something like a toner, but in Japanese terms the lotion is used as a prep to the moisturiser and is patted on to the skin, whereas in the west we tend to think of a toner as something to wipe away residue and refresh the skin. The Milk is like a light moisturiser.

The ES range has a ‘5 free formula’ which means there is no fragrance, colours, alcohol, mineral oil or preservatives. It is PH balanced for low irritation. Despite being lightweight it i also very hydrating, containing 3 types of hydraluronic acid and Zinc to nourish and condition.

Anyway, when my skin was at it’s worse I started using this very simple, almost bland range to try and fix things and it worked. The ES range is genuinely very gentle and none-irritating to sensitive skins, and those having a flare up.

The Cleansing Foam:

The cleansing foam is a pump activated cleanser which products a consistent soft white foam. Once rubbed into the skin, you can feel the slipperiness more, and it cleanses fine but is not going to remove tough or waterproof make up – for that you need something else like a specific make up remover.

On that aspect the product isn’t perfect but for a foam cleanser I found it very gentle and none-drying (I usually hate foam cleanser). This is also a nice wash for the morning as it’s so lightweight (when you don’t need to get rid of make up just yet).

ES lotion is a clear product with a slightly-thicker-than-water texture. It’s not bad, it doesn’t smell of anything as such and leaves a slightly sticky feeling on the skin at first. Whilst it is not that exciting, it’s certainly effective and again, very none irritating. It feels seems to work nice as a pre-moisturiser and used with a regular moisturiser really seems to boost hydration.

Finally the ES Milk is a very lightweight lotion – I would’ve preferred the cream in hind site, but never mind. The milk is very very lightweight and has a lot of ‘spreading’ power – just a small dot really spreads out on the skin and once on, it takes a little while to sink in.

When I apply this to my skin it always feels like too much so I end up putting the rest on my arms such is the thinness of this product. Despite this being light once again it seems to work a dream for dry skins and especially when matched with the Lotion. It has a ‘slick’ feel to it which some may not like – I didn’t mind it necessarily, it just means it takes a while to sink in properly and it’s easy to over use.

When I used these products in an attempt to fix my skin it worked, and it worked fast too, within 3 days the patches had gone. What I will say is that the whole range is very lightweight and may not feel rich enough for some people – it also isn’t a ‘fancy’ range, there’s no anti-ageing, whitening or whatever in these products which is why I used it to fix my skin then started to introduce fancier items later on.
But despite this, the ES range really is so so so so so good for people with sensitive skin or people who are just going through a rough patch with their skin and want to calm things down a little. I highly recommend it.
I purchased these items from Alphabeauty on eBay and paid around £10 per item.
