Yorkshire Celebrates Being Named the Leading Destination in Europe

After beating off competition from Berlin, Florence and Madrid, was named as the best place to visit in Europe Yorkshire this month by the World Travel Awards at a ceremony in Turkey.

This makes Yorkshire the first location, rather than a major city or country, to have won the award in 17 years. So what makes Yorkshire so special?

Leeds – Our City

Leeds - Clarence Dock

Leeds is the third largest city in the UK, and is also one of the most exciting. Dubbed the ‘Knightsbridge of the North’, Leeds is heralded for its shopping centres, which includes Trinity Leeds; the city’s newest addition.

If shopping is not quite your thing, the city also boasts multiple museums and most notably, the Royal Armouries, which can be found just outside the newly refurbished Clarence Dock.

York

York

Not only is York the capital city of Yorkshire, but also, it is also one of the most beautiful and historic cities in Europe. With hundreds of attractions and things to do within the tight-knit city, there’s little wonder why roughly 4 million people choose to visit every single year.

From the rooftop viewing platforms of Europe’s largest gothic minster, through to darkness of The York Dungeon, there really is something for everyone in the former capital of Northern England.

Harrogate

Harrogate

Almost certainly one of the most exquisite towns in the UK, Harrogate is a spa town located just outside the Yorkshire Dales. Like Leeds, Harrogate is great for shopping; most notably for fashion, antiques and art.

Another great feature of Harrogate, is the fact that it offers a fabulous array of restaurants. From cafés to fine dining, there is something for every palate and the more notable establishments include Chez La Vie and Van Zeller.

The Yorkshire Dales

The Yorkshire Dales

Otherwise known as The Dales, the 680 square mile National Park forms one of the most magnificent places in Northern England alongside the Lake District.

With five visitor centres in the park at Aysgarth Falls, Grassington, Hawes, Malham and Reeth, there really is no reason why anyone should not want to begin an adventure in the most natural and beautiful place in Yorkshire.

Have you got any favourite places in Yorkshire that you think made it the Leading European Destination of 2013?
