Thank God It’s Fibre!

I've just shifted to the Klarra's new workspace a couple of weeks back & I'm now doing my work here as I'm typing away ;)

Glad that dadsie chose to install the Fibre broadband and the internet speed at the new workspace is as good as my home! In fact, we have opted for the fibre broadband a couple of years ago when it was first introduced (pretty new then) for our home's internet connection and since then, we have really enjoyed fast speed connection and kudos to the tech guys for coming out with such a technology!

I actually mentioned it in my blog back then that it was a big YAY for all of us in the family ;)

Anyway, I was quite confused to what Fibre broadband was when it was first introduced so in case some of you are facing some confusion over here, I thought I'll share a summary on what Fibre broadband is all about!

WHAT IS FIBRE BROADBAND?
In layman terms, fibre broadband is basically a way how internet is delivered to your home/office. In some countries, there are two kinds of fibre broadband types, one called FTTC, Fibre-to-the-cabinet (which provides connection to the cabinet and later finds its way to your house) and another is called FTTP, Fibre-to-the-premises (which supplies connection directly to your doorstep – hence boasts greater speeds). And thankfully, we have something similar to Fibre-to-the-premises in Singapore and it's called the Fibre-to-the-Home (FTTH) technology. FTTH is a type of Fibre Broadband and is how Fibre Optic is brought to the home. Consumers can subscribe to Fibre Broadband service from the Internet Service Providers (ISP).

By subscribing to Fibre Broadband, it involves the usage of Optical fibre cables (which will be installed at your house if you opt for fibre broadband). In a nutshell. these cables are thin strands of glass – as thin as a human hair and use light to transmit data over long distances and at speeds of 1 Gbps and more. Besides that, these cables are immune to electromagnetic interference which means that the quality of information received is almost as good as what had been sent out, no matter the distance between two locations. This means much, much, much faster transmitting speed (think of your song/show downloads!) and accuracy in information! *throws confetti*

BENEFITS OF FIBRE BROADBAND

Here are just some summary of the benefits of Fibre Broadband applied to the different situations.

Be it the scale of companies and whether you are at home, we all would definitely appreciate faster internet speed and this can be done with Fibre Broadband. As cliche as the saying goes, time is money and time lost is time we can't retrieve back! Given that everything is online now, I'm sure these benefits aren’t enhanced just for us only, but people around us such as the family, and your employees or your partners etc. Fibre can be used for anyone – the young and old and for multi-user at the same time. We can all enjoy first-class online experience simultaneously and ensure more efficiency in our work and time management ;)

Anyway, with that said, now let's talk about OpenNet.

WHAT IS OPENNET?

OpenNet is the company awarded the contract by the Infocomm Development Authority (IDA) to build, manage and operate the high-quality fibre grid. And this is the world’s first nationwide all-fibre platform rollout, setting the stage for homes and offices to enjoy rich content and ultra-high speed.

OpenNet carries on its shoulders the heavy responsibility of building, managing and operating a truly open high quality fibre platform for Singapore’s Next Generation Nationwide Broadband Network (Next Gen NBN) – Next Gen NBN is a pervasive and ultra-high speed broadband network will position Singapore for an infocomm-enabled future. The Next Gen NBN will reinforce the status of Singapore as an infocomm hub and open new doors to economic opportunities, business growth and social vibrancy. It is envisioned that this will eventually provide a nationwide ultra-high speed broadband access of 1Gbps and more, to all physical addresses including homes, schools, government buildings, businesses, hospitals and NBAPs (Non Building Access Points).
