unearthing a relic: 1989 Teen magazine.

Hi everyone,

I was at my parents' house yesterday, and was going through their piano bench for some early music sheets for my son, when I found something fabulous: a 1989 Teen magazine in wonderful condition. So exciting. When I saw there was even a feature on perms, I got a bit giddy. I know you all would like to see some of the best parts, wouldn't you?

Actually, some of the best parts were the ads, bringing me back to some of my favorite things during that rad 80's time, like Caboodles (awesome), Generra stirrup pants, Electric Youth, Friday! Love's Baby Soft and Charlie perfumes, Jordache, acid-washed jeans (and super-long jean shorts, aka jorts), L.A. Gear. Some of my favorites:

There was a sweet article on some current fashions in the great outdoors. I'm certain my sister and I had very similar ski gear. But check out the peek of L.L. Bean boots in the second picture at the top -- proves there are some classics that stand the test of time, no?

And of course, the section on Pretty Perms. The best part? One of the featured perms was ripped out, which we know means I likely wanted to bring it to the salon to capture the glory. How much do we love the first Before/After with the short bangs? Are you thinking that today's B/A would be flipped?

Here's a better closeup of the first one:

Ooh, and there's a section on DIY embellishments!! J.Crew perhaps had this same issue a couple years ago and was inspired? Embellished sweatshirt and denim, check!

I remember reading all the classified ads in the back, especially ones about increasing your bust size, but this one really captured my attention. The Tymar Group must have made a mint!

Where were you in December 1989? I was in 7th grade, going through some awkward times. When I find my albums, I'll be sure to scan in a picture for you all to see. I might even be able to find one of me in stirrup pants! Wait, I have one of me in stirrup pants, although it's not from 1989, it's probably from 1987, but still. It's fairly great. I think I might have shared it on the blog eons ago, but it's worth another share. I give you, me, modeling for Kohl's:

Glorious.

ETA:
and
While I'm dying laughing at the outfits in Debbie's videos, I'm going to sound like a big ol' square and say I felt a bit nostalgic for a time when most teenage pop stars and their fans wore things like this, a bit more...well, covered up, rather than constantly trying to be all sexified.

Have a wonderful day!
