Alder Skirt for Spring

Two posts in a row of selfish sewing...shocking! Thanks to Rachael of Imagine Gnats for asking me to test her new pattern the Alder Skirt, I had the perfect excuse to sew more clothes for me.

pattern: Alder Skirt from Imagine Gnats (sizes 2-22)
size: 8
fabric: cotton/poly stretch lime/white jumbo check twill from Chez Ami Fabrics and Lisette twill in green (spring 2011)
mods: cut the plaid fabric on the bias, piping in the front

My original intention was to have the entire skirt with the exception of the pockets and waistband in the green check fabric. However, despite my best efforts to match up the checks it was not looking good. Luckily, I had just enough of the solid green twill to cut out a front panel. Whew! I also added white piping to separate the checks that are going all kinds of crazy directions and the solid green front panel.

There are 2 options for the front panel (pleated and flat) and the pockets (flat or ones that bow out slightly). I did the pleated front and the pockets that bow out. I was a little unsure at first if those pockets were a good choice or not since I tend to shy away from anything that adds bulk to the hips. But I'm perfectly happy with the final look.:)

The skirt is very comfortable to wear thanks to the a-line shape and the elastic back. I wore the skirt all day on Sunday with a camisole that *ahem* covers the girls a little more and a light weight white cardigan.

MG has put in a request for a similar skirt. Luckily, Rachael also recently released the Alder Skirt for girls (sizes 4-14). Alder Skirts for everyone!:)

In case you were wondering, MG's Girls on the Run 5k was on Saturday. Our official time was 43:05 minutes. We ran about 65% of it. I was so proud of MG for persevering as the morning started off cool but quickly got hot and steamy as the sun came out. Our plan was to sprint the last 1/4 mile to the finish line. Just before we started, she oh so sweetly asked if we could hold hands during the sprint and across the finish line. Of course!
