New Old Paintings
I’ve always admired people who can make photos talk. And sing quietly. And breathe. And shiver. And whisper.
Latvian fashion brand Keta Gutmane (along with photographer Martins Cirulis) is one of those people. Inspired by the 16/17th century Flemish paintings, new collection Relics AW 2014/2015 creates an associative space that feels like an old painting. All is missing is a skull, a wine goblet and maybe a bunch of pheasant feathers. Instead, there are witnesses of today: a computer mouse, a shopping cart and a pile of books (those, however, could have also ‘happened’ in the paintings created centuries ago). Designer is experimenting with the strict art canons of the period – hence the face and the posture of the model.
The collection boldly merges a sacral feel, urban city mood and avant-garde roots. Its wearer is a self-confident independent woman – discrete and private like a nun yet equipped with hi-tech urban gear.
At the moment the collection is on its way to Paris Fashion week where it will be presented at Void showroom. As I also have plans to be in Paris at the time, I will drop by and see the collection myself.

Zīmola rudens/ziema 2015 sieviešu apģērbu kolekcijas ‘Relics’ iedvesmas avots ir 16. un 17. gadsimta flāmu portretu glezniecība un tai raksturīgais stindzinošais miers, specifiskā laika plūduma izjūta un striktie kanoni – pievērsiet uzmanību modeles sejai un stājai. Eksperimentējot ar tagadnes un pagātnes simboliem, kolekcijas fotogrāfiju sērija iemieso sakrālu sajūtu un urbānas pilsētvides noskaņu. Viss, kas pietrūkst, ir galvaskauss, vīna kauss un varbūt saujiņa fazāna spalvu. Tie aizstāti ar šo laiku lieciniekiem: datorpeli, lielveikala iepirkumu ratiem un kaudzi ar grāmatām (kuras gan tikpat labi varētu “notikt” arī kolekcijas iedvesmas avotos).
Šobrīd kolekcija ir ceļā uz Parīzes Modes nedēļu, kur to izrādīs Void showroom. Arī man ir plāns doties uz Parīzes pusi – būs man vēl viens pasākums, kas jāieraksta plānotājā. Tikmēr Rīgā, vīna telpā Tinto izstādīti seši projekta ‘Relics’ darbi, kas radīti sadarbībā ar fotogrāfu Mārtiņu Cīruli.
