I
looooove hotels, and have had the good fortune to experience a wealth of inspiring spaces
around the world, from
La Mamounia in
Marrakech to
The Upper House in
Hong Kong ~ but I believe my so-far favorite must be
Hotel Villa Bahia, which we stumbled upon in the heart of
Salvador’s historic center. A cozy 17-room jewel of an inn built from two adjoined Portugese colonial homes, it’s an adventure in and of itself.
Each room is named after and decorated in ode to a particular period in Bahia’s history ~ Africa, Asia, Europe ~ and the ways they all blend together make the hotel an intensely romantic reflection of the distinctive local soul. One day, I’d love to escape to Salvador da Bahia for months at a time, hole up in the Hotel Villa Bahia, and write a book. It’s the sort of place one should do such a thing.
The hotel’s restaurant alone is worth the trip to Brazil. They served the greatest ceviche I’ve ever tasted (above right). // Our travel companion
Gaby claims to have finally mastered the recipe for moqueca (below left), the steaming fish stew that is Salvador’s local specialty. I can’t wait to recreate it
out in Amagansett.

redecorating our little cottage out east in anticipation of
another dreamy summer, and are channeling the villa’s juxtaposition of ancient, rough-hewn woods and white-washed textures.
