tips and tricks for travel

Before our recent trip to Africa, Damien and I did a lot of research on tips and tricks for travel. We were nervous about our 15 hour flight from New York to Johannesburg and wanted to make sure we were prepared. I’m happy to reveal that traveling was a breeze so I’m sharing our tips and tricks with you. Enjoy!

  • Luggage IS important! I prefer carry-ons so I eliminate the risk of lost luggage. Go with pieces that have sturdy wheels, are durable and of course fashionable! These new wheeled pieces from Brahmin were the perfect travel companions on our trip.
  • Pack light. Pack smart. Put your outfits together before you pack to avoid overpacking. Go with pieces and palettes that work together, so you can mix and match your items. For this trip I went with neutrals like cream, white, black, khaki and army green.
  • Only pack two pairs of shoes. Probably the hardest tip to follow but seriously don’t pack more than two pairs! Bring a pair of heels and a pair of flats then wear some cool kicks on the plane. This way your ready for anything and everything from hiking to dancing.
  • Travel size is your friend. The last thing you want to do is have to check your bag because your shampoo is over 3oz. Stock up on travel sized products or stop at pharmacy at your destination and buy your toiletries there.
  • Bring your own food on the plane. This is especially important for long flights. Unless you’re in first class, plane food is gross and loaded with sodium. Sodium dehydrates you and makes you feel like crap. Stop at your local grocery and pick up some healthy goodies to get you through. I promise it will make all the difference.
  • Hydrate, hydrate, hydrate! Like the food on a plane, the air on a plane is very dehydrating so make sure to drink plenty of water. Bring your own or ask for the bottled kind on board.
  • Always bring a sweater. Not only is a sweater great for the airplane, but it’s also great for the trip. If you’re visiting a warm climate, chances are there’s AC wherever you go and it can be quite chilly in restaurants and shops.
  • Have fun! Don’t let travel stress you out. Airports and new cities can be intense at times but remember it’s all part of the experience. Just breathe.
