Paula’s Empanadas, Kensington – Chilean food with the Chilean tick of approval

Completos palta meaning hot dog and guacamole – $7.50. It’s messy but it’s gooood.

Meet my Chilean mates Pap and Bilz.

The Paula steak sandwich – $9.50. Not bad, but would get an empanada over this any day.

As a general rule, pastry encased anything is probably going to be pretty amazing.

“Get this for sure” says our Chilean friend.

Meet the carb meat mayo gang.

A case of cakes.

Doesn’t look much from the outside.

Taking a skeptical Chilean guy to Paula’s and then seeing admit that this place was pretty legit was a good win for a Sunday afternoon.

I first went to Paula’s for a friend’s birthday lunch out in Fairfield last year and had been thinking about their empanadas and completos ever since. I’ve only just discovered they have a branch in Kensington which is too convenient not to go to way more often.

You know a Chilean place is good when you’re basically the only non Chilean person there. And at Paula’s that was definitely the case.

Do get a few empanadas because these are ridiculously good. Probably the best thing on the menu and most likely the reason why the place is called Paula’s Empanadas. We got the baked empanada de carne with beef, onion, olive, egg and spices and I could have had about 3 more of them. The fried empanada con queso (filled with a home made cheese filling) was gooey and melty and something I would get again with no hesitation.

The completos (hot dogs) were messy and laden with a heart attack inducing amount of mayonnaise but so worth the impending clogged arteries. I wouldn’t skip the palta (avocado) because it’s avocado and avocado is awesome and also, it just makes the completo taste waaaaay better.

Yep, I’m coming back to Paula’s. Probably next weekend. See you there.
