Sushi Gen: Authentic Japanese in Little Tokyo, Downtown LA

If you’re too much of a baller to get the regular lunch set you can eat a la carte at the counter.

The well used lunch menu. Looks like it hasn’t changed in years!

Small selection of sashimi. Super fresh and super tasty.

Light and not too greasy tempura. Those prawns were huge and meaty. Yum.

The sushi set with the usual suspects. I’m not usually eel’s #1 fan, but this was really good.

Being a tourist at the Walt Disney concert hall. I can confirm that the surfaces were hot.

For some reason I feel fairly confident in the quality of Japanese food in LA. Maybe it’s because of previous experiences here or maybe it’s because I think there are a fair few Japanese who live here. Anyway, I haven’t been proven wrong so far and Sushi Gen is definitely one of the ones you should go to if you’re looking for high quality but not crazy expensive Japanese food in Downtown.

Lunch will cost you around $15 (depending on what you get) although you could ball out on an uni and sashimi combination set which will set you back $35. I ordered the sashimi and tempura set which was $15 which had some amazingly fresh pieces of sashimi and not too greasy tempura. Win. The sushi set was a good size and didn’t leave you feeling like you ate too much. Which I find to be a common problem for myself in LA (eg. burritos here are HUGE!)

I love a place that is super Japanese with Japanese chefs, waitstaff and customers. Makes me feel like I’m back in the fatherland. Plus it also indicates this place does pretty legit Japanese food too. Definitely going back to this one when the next Japanese craving hits.

Tip: Get there before opening time to avoid waiting for a while. It gets very busy.

Thanks to Discover LA for the recommendation!
