A few weeks back, I headed
deeper into Kensington to the epitome of an artist's studio warehouse, The Viking Mill. Greeted by local jewelry designer
Carly N. Herman, we ventured up the old 1937 Philadelphia Wood & Heel Co. steps, (my booty still burning from the morning's stairmaster workout....ugh). Miss Herman, the creator behind
BOMBita Jewelry, was kind enough to let me invade her shared workspace and learn about her work and
current collaborations. The
Tyler School of Art alum has been creating her jewelry design and metal smith company at Viking Mill for the past 2 years. Carly
mainly works with precious metals such as brass, silver, gold and bronze.
I've seen
a lot of handmade jewelry here in
the city, from small boutiques, trunk shows, pop-in-shops to First Friday art galleries. Her work is
goes above the term "one-of-a-kind". Carly's imagination began with her journey through Spain back in college; to nature's
current grandeur and the
movement of the human body. The fusion of inspiration and refined metals are worth the investment.
She shares the space with two other designers, Emily Kane designer of
Lace Army and Desiree Casimiro of
Demure de Rigueur.com. The
trio is now joining forces to create the jewelry line, Forge and Finish. Carley's collection is sold at
Ritual Ritual on 2nd and Poplar &
Street Glitter Gallery on 306 East Girard Avenue.
Emily Kane is also sold at
Ritual Ritual &
Moon and Arrow on 754 S. 4th Street. The trios next event is
Sunday, August 3rd at the
2nd Street Festival. Look for them near the Foodery on 2nd and Poplar:)
