Jason Danvers hasn’t heard from his sister Hayden in years. An addict, Hayden has abused his trust over and over again, but when Hayden shows up asking for one last favor, Jason can’t refuse her. Jason’s not sure he trusts Hayden’s claims that she’s clean and sober now, but what he does know is that he’s more than happy to take in Sierra, his seventeen-year-old niece, while Hayden makes amends, as she says she needs to. But when Hayden disappears, Jason realizes he has more on his hands than he bargained for, putting his own life on the line as he searches for his sister.

A suspenseful novel, The Forgotten Girl features fully realized, well-written characters and a relevant theme about how the past always catches up with you. Fans of suspense thrillers should absolutely pick up this book.

Full Review:

The Forgotten Girl is a suspenseful novel about how the past can come back to haunt you, no matter how far you run. Jason himself is troubled by the past, especially now that he has moved back to the small town he grew up in. Jason’s best friend, Logan, disappeared the night after their graduation after an argument, and though Jason knows Logan is still living the high life somewhere, it bothers him. Similarly, Hayden has made a lot of mistakes in her past. When she shows up, wanting to make amends for those errors, even though Jason doesn’t trust his sister anymore, he recognizes the pull the past has on her.

The novel is twisty, moving quickly and keeping the reader interested from beginning to end. Aspects of The Forgotten Girl are predictable, but there are other plot points that will surprise the reader fully. Bell put together an intricate novel, tying together many different plot threads and bringing them together slowly, in a satisfying way.

The characters in The Forgotten Girl are well-written and interesting; they aren’t perfect by any stretch of the imagination, but that makes them realistic. It’s easy to doubt Hayden, like Jason does, but it’s also clear why he wants to trust her so badly. These characters have been through a lot over the course of their lives, and it shows. Though the reader is dropped in, it’s easy to get the sense that it’s just that: dropped into a life that has existed and will continue to exist once the last pages of the books are turned.

I’ve been a fan of David Bell’s novel’s since his first; he writes gripping suspense stories that will absolutely keep you up late into the night. If you haven’t given his books a chance yet, I recommend picking up any (and all) of them; you’re in for a treat.
