I had a different post planned today for the Sunday Vintage Religion feature, but decided to post this clip from The Spitfire Grill instead.
Fast forward to about 2:25 where you can hear Percy (Alison Elliott) sing the vintage hymn, There Is A Balm In Gilead.
This is such a great old African spiritual. I only sang it a few times growing up, but I always loved it. It comes from Jeremiah 8:22: “Is there no balm in Gilead? Is there no physician there? Why then is there no healing for the wound of my people?”
Christ is the balm of Gilead — the antidote for our wounds.
Spitfire Grill with Alison Elliott
There is a balm in Gilead
To make the wounded whole
There is a balm in Gilead
To heal the sin-sick soul
Sometimes I feel discouraged
And think my work’s in vain
But then the Holy Spirit
Revives my soul again
Don’t ever feel discouraged
For Jesus is your friend
And if you lack of knowledge
He’ll ne’er refuse to lend
If you cannot preach like Peter
If you cannot pray like Paul
You can tell the love of Jesus
And say, “He died for all”.
