Ready to Raw! An intro to the miraculous world of Raw Food

By Amanda Clegg.

Sitting from my vantage point the ultimate way to consume food is to eat delicious and nutritious living foods, wholefoods (unprocessed) made from the freshest (ideally home, local community garden grown), seasonal and organic ingredients. Raw food is characterised as maintaining all the nutrients normally destroyed by cooking typically over 45-47 degrees celsius. As a matter of fact, when we cook our food, we destroy many of the enzymes that help us digest our intake.

Dr Mercola a leading worldwide nutritional expert gives the lowdown on enzymes;

“Enzymes are proteins; they are catalysts to speed up and facilitate reactions in your body. In fact, some biochemical reactions will not even occur without these enzymes. So if all of your food is cooked, your body is going to be deficient in the enzymes it needs to function properly and it will be lacking biophotons.”

“Let food be thy medicine and medicine be thy food” – Hippocrates

Enzymes, vitamins, minerals, phytonutrients, protein, essential fats and fiber provided by our food are involved in growth, repair and maintenance of the body. Enzymes are the living proteins that direct the life force into our biochemical and metabolic processes. They help transform and store energy, activate hormones, dissolve fiber, prevent clotting and have anti-inflammatory effects. Enzymes help balance and restore the immune system, heal many diseases and even help repair our DNA.

Why be a Raw Foodie?

Life is about feeling good and engaging in healthy practices and eating clean is an instant feel good way to live. My raw food journey began on a detox cleanse called “Soak Your Nuts” by Karyn Calabrese. I started feeling so amazing during the detox, I decided to keep going with the raw food and superfoods aspect and so it was a no brainer to ditch ‘the baddies’ meat, dairy and sugar for my own good. I started to eat based on the way it made me feel and my body developed its own intelligence, telling me what was good for it and what wasn’t.

The Benefits:
The benefits of unaltered healthy enzymes derived from raw food and even more easily from vegetable juices is that they feed into our cells straight away supplying the ultimate life force for repair and function. When I knock back a cold pressed juice I can literally feel the organic liquid run through my body and feel its vibrancy and healing effects immediately.

Some of my many personal benefits experienced by raw intake include:

  • Massive boost in daily protein intake from Spirulina powder approx. (60%)
  • Enhanced mood from the consumption of high vibrational unaltered organic food
  • Prevention and reversal of chronic disease (reduction of internal digestive inflammation)
  • Puts me ‘into my body’ with feelings of lightness and increased energy
  • Increased brain function and mental clarity
  • Release from unhealthy food obsessions and addictions
  • Heightened sense of awareness of self and all things
  • Improved muscle tone due to easily absorbed nutrients
  • Maintenance of ideal body weight

There are 3 main categories in the raw foodie way of life:

  1. Greens
  2. Superfoods (characterised as medicinal food)
  3. Herbalism

Typically Raw Food way of life looks something like the Raw Food Pyramid below:

In essence raw food consumption gives you a sense of aliveness, vibrancy and wellness. When you eat organic living food, aim to stay raw as much as possible at least up until dinner-time and ideally 80% of your day. Eating raw is an amazing way to live and a catalyst to feel better than ever, it’s a life that nature intended for us all to be well, abundant and happy.
