Is high kitch the new thing?

From the last time I read up on trend reviews I recall mentions of pastels dominating spring, white collars, doses of 3D here and there, fringes, florals and some references to pop-art. The fashion forecast for Spring looked more like business as usual. That was until the February fashion month - an event where street style is bound to serve as a prelude of what wiill be IT the coming season.
And there comes the surpise...the fashion squad looking like Harajukou girls. Maybe not all fashion shows regurals embraced the new found interest in funny attire but as a clicked from slide to slide of Tommy Ton's snaps on Style.com, it became evident that it was a repetitive pattern - funny clothing, pilled together with even funnier attire and matched with the funniest accessories. While I'm not against it or in favour, I could not escape the tought of kitch springing to mind and Suzy Menkes' stand in her article 'The Circus of Fashion'.
While this development on the scene of sidewalks outside fashion shows does pertain to individuality and authenticity - concepts that should be celebrated in this day and age we're living in, it still has me wondering what the hell happened.
Where is this fashion revolution coming from?
