For my first official college party, my roommate and I spent the better part of an afternoon coming up with what to wear. I chose a pink top (with a sequined trim), a dark denim skirt, that hit at unfortunate spot right below my knees, and to top it off, a matching denim jacket that I tied around the waist. We snapped dozens of photographs throughout the night and once we got them developed (this was 2001, after all) a few weeks later, I became aware of just how wrong the proportions were. Besides my coordinated denim ensemble, the jacket itself was far too bulky to be used as a belt. I've since softened to the idea of tying things at the waist, but now make sure they're a light juxtaposition to the rest of the outfit.
