Week of Makeup Favourites 2014: My Top 10 Eyeliners

TGIF folks! Hope you’ve had a good week thus far. Me, I’m just looking forward to the weekend as always!

As it’s Friday, we’re on to day 5 of Makeup Favourites Week and today, it’s all about eyeliners.

I remember a few years ago, in one of my new year’s resolutions, I mentioned that that was the year I was going to master the liquid eyeliner once and for all. I was really envious of those who could draw on liquid eyeliners so effortlessly and with heaps of practice, I finally did it! It’s not perfect or anything but at least, I can say yes, I know how to use it now.

For me, it’s imperative that the eyeliners do not smudge. I can’t stand eyeliners that smudge to my lower lids. As I wear glasses most of the time, the shadow from the glasses and smudged eyeliner onto the lower lids at the end of the day gives me a very tired look. The eyeliners mentioned here do not smudge nor fade after many hours. This is with eyeshadow primer on because I never wear eye makeup without primer (my oily eyelids wouldn’t cooperate with eye makeup if I don’t apply primer first. Sigh.).

Here they are in no particular order.

Maybelline Master Precise Ink Pen Eyeliner
This liquid eyeliner has a very fine nib. You may have seen advertisements of this liquid eyeliner used to draw floral patterns next to the model’s eyes. This eyeliner’s fine nib allows you to do just that without any issues. Of course, how many of us would actually need to use eyeliner for that, eh? My point is, the fine nib makes it very easy for those with small and/or hooded eyes to use as it minimises the issue of accidentally smudging the lids. I like using this to line the eyes without needing to do the winged flick.

Rimmel Scandaleyes Thick and Thin Eyeliner
Some people find the slanted felt-tip nib hard to use but personally, I prefer it as it makes it so easy to use! It’s like a calligraphy pen for the eyelids. I find doing the winged look easier with the slanted nib especially when I need to follow the curve of my eyeballs seamlessly without dragging. Hmm this reminds me, it’s time to chuck my old Scandaleyes and get a new one.

Kat Von D Tattoo Liner
This was a recent discovery for me and I finally understand why it’s such a hit. This is such a fab liquid eyeliner! Like Maybelline’s Master Precise, the brush tip is very fine and it’s so easy to use. I had this on for so many hours and there wasn’t any smudging or fading.

Napoleon Perdis Matte Eye Ink
This liquid eyeliner looks and feels very wet when applied but when it’s dried, it leaves a matte finish. It has quite a thick brush in comparison to the liquid eyeliners mentioned in this list. I wouldn’t recommend this to beginners because the tendency to make mistakes is quite high. Nevertheless, it looks great especially when creating a thick winged liner look.

Estee Lauder liquid eyeliner
Okay, to be fair, I’ve not tried Estee Lauder’s Double Wear liquid eyeliner but I have tried their limited edition holiday/seasonal liquid eyeliners and all of them are fantastic. Estee Lauder’s liquid eyeliners are similar to tubed mascaras; when you remove them with eye makeup remover, they flake off instead of smear off your cotton pads. The intensity of their liquid eyeliners are amazing and they stay on for hours without any smudging or fading. Very impressive!

Dolly Wink Liquid Eyeliner
Dolly Wink’s liquid eyeliner reminds me of Maybelline’s Master Precise. The brush is very small and fine. The intensity of the liquid eyeliner is not that strong as the rest of the eyeliners here but it’s still easy to use nevertheless. It makes a great beginner’s liquid eyeliner and I wish I started out with it instead of trying on fiddly tube-like inky eyeliners first.

Clinique Quickliner for Eyes Intense
This is the only pencil eyeliner in the list and that’s because all of the rest of the pencil eyeliners I’ve used just don’t make the mark. I love the Quickliner Intense eyeliners and they’re fantastic for creating very quick smokey eyes without needing heaps of makeup.

Hourglass Calligraphy Liquid Eyeliner
This was the first liquid eyeliner I splurged on (I usually only stick to the cheapies when I can) and I have no regrets. It has a narrow felt-tip nib that makes it very easy to draw thin and thick lines. Creating the winged liner look is very easy with the Calligraphy eyeliner.

Lord & Berry Liquid Eyeliner Pen
This liquid eyeliner is incredibly similar to the Hourglass Calligraphy. Even the size of the felt-tip nibs are the same. Just like the Calligraphy, this also makes it very easy to draw on the lash line.

L’Oreal SuperLiner Perfect Slim
This is quite an interesting liquid eyeliner. It has the longest felt-tip nib out of all the eyeliners mentioned here and has a very fine tip. This is also another liquid eyeliner that’s easy to create the winged liner especially when, er, winging out at the corners of the eyes.

There you have it, my top 10 eyeliners and why I love them. It took a long time for me to master them properly and really, if Ms Clumsy Hands here can do, you can do it too.

Stay tuned to tomorrow as I share with you all things lashes and brows!

What about you? What’s your favourite eyeliner? Do you prefer using liquid or pencil eyeliners?
