Fun ways to keep fit

Sometimes, getting to the gym just might not fit into one’s schedule, or the hassle of the trip may overshadow the benefits of working out. Other times, the same old routine at the gym may just be boring. So, what is there to do?

Believe it or not, there are plenty of fun ways to keep fit, with both friends and alone – and it doesn’t require going to the gym. The secret to getting into shape – and staying healthy – isn’t just reading up on the latest Canadian health blog but taking every opportunity to be active. Here are some fantastic ideas.

Change things up

The same old exercise routine can become boring, and that can make it harder to want to workout. Doing something that is both physical and fun is a great way to get in shape and stay motivated to keep moving. When something is fun, it is easier to participate because it doesn’t feel like exercise. Additionally, trying a new activity will work the body out in a different way than a regular routine, so one will inevitably see better results, especially if it is repeated once or twice a week.

Beat it up at boot camp

These days, boot camp-style workouts are all the rage. They are fun, filled with challenges, and combine strength training with cardio – and they are fun to do with friends. But, it is not necessary to pay a trainer – one can create his or her own tailored boot camp right at home or in a favorite local park. The only thing needed is a good pair of sneakers! Start off with some jumping jacks, high-knee running, lunges, triceps dips, push-ups, and crunches – do each for about a minute with short rest periods between. Repeat several times to really get a good workout.

Take a tour – on foot

Believe it or not, walking is an excellent way to stay fit. It requires only a good pair of shoes and some pleasant weather, though the latter is not a deal breaker for some people. A fun way to change things up in a walking routine is to do it in a different area, so why not take a tour of a big city or historic area. Learn something new, while working out! Or, take a hike, which is a little more intense, but also a great way to burn those calories.

Join a roller derby league

Playing sports is a no-brainer when it comes to keeping fit, but why not push the envelope and join a roller derby league? It is primarily an all-female contact sport played by two teams of five each on roller skates! Roller derby is a great way to get the heart pumping, working both the upper and lower body. It is also an excellent way to stay social and get out of the house!

So, forget calling it ‘exercise’ and have fun instead. Staying in shape doesn’t mean a boring old routine of squats, push-ups, and gym machines – it can be fun, social, and something one can look forward to each and every day.
