My Style Icon: Janelle Monáe

The first time I saw Janelle Monáe perform on TV, her unique style captivated me. In our society of practically naked women everywhere you turn, Janelle is a breath of fresh air in her now iconic black tuxedo and saddle shoes. But she’s much more than just that. She’s an amazing role model for everyone.

At first glance, it may seem that Janelle is tied to the identity that she’s crafted. Or rather that her clothing is her identity. But that would be a superficial observation. Her style forces the viewer to question what it means to be not only a woman, but what it means to have an identity irregardless or gender. Her style transcends questions of femininity and masculinity instead pushing us to ask why clothes are important to begin with.

Through writing about my style icons, I’ve realized that I admire women who take their identity into their own hands. They toss aside society’s prescriptions and create what they want to see in the mirror. This is a powerful message not just to young women, but to all of us. There’s power and there’s beauty in choosing how we move throughout this world, and Janelle is the perfect example of just being yourself, whoever that may be.

Janelle is inspiring for so many reasons and not just because of her clothing. Her music, her image and her insights all encourage young women especially to, well, just be themselves. And I think that’s something we can all get used to.
