Have you ever thought about the increasing influence technology has on modern society? Is it possible that artificial intelligence could some day surpass human intelligence? In “Transcendence,” Johnny Depp stars as a computer scientist studying artificial intelligence whose mind becomes trapped into a mainframe machine. College Lifestyles™ has more details about this sci-fi thriller before it hits theaters on April 17.

Dr. Will Caster, Johnny Depp, is an influential researcher in the field of artificial intelligence working to create a machine that combines human intelligence and emotions. Although his research causes him to become an acclaimed public figure, it also makes him the target of an anti-technology group, R.I.F.T.

The group shoots Will in an attempt to end his work, but instead it only backfires. His wife, Evelyn, and best friend, Max, both researchers as well, upload his mind into the mainframe machine. It soon becomes realized that this machine is dangerous, but Evelyn struggles to accept it because it would mean putting an end to her love. As Will’s desire for knowledge enhances, his pursuit of power does so as well and his dangerous influence sees no end. If Will isn’t stopped, it may be the end of mankind, as everyone knew it.

Alongside Depp, “Transcendence” stars Morgan Freeman, Rebecca Hall, Kate Mara and Paul Bettany. The film is the directorial debut of the talented cinematographer Wally Pfister. If you can’t wait to see this movie, you can download the “Transcendence: Origins” app on iTunes. The app allows you to chose which side you’re on, the anti-technology activists or the Living Machines Lab. You can reconstruct memories and help rebuild a mind to finally figure out whose consciousness has been uploaded to form a machine.

Whether your motive to see the film is purely for Johnny Depp or if you can’t resist an intelligent thriller, this definitely looks like a movie you don’t want to miss. Let CL know your thoughts about the newest edition by tweeting us @collegelifestyl.
