Rural Retreats: What to Pack for your Escape to the Country

While some of you may be dreaming of faraway lands, where the climate guarantees sunshine and blue skies, others will be looking for a holiday a little closer to home, either because of budget issues or because they realise that the UK is teeming with incredible destinations that often go overlooked. We may still be stuck in a bit of a cold spell, but that doesn’t mean we can’t be looking at an escape to the countryside at some point in the near future; whether it’s to enjoy the crisp fresh air of Britain in the midst of winter, followed by a snuggle in front of a log fire, or whether it’s to enjoy the sunny summer skies that we can hope for in a few months, the UK countryside is awash with picturesque, rural retreats that would be perfect as a getaway from the rat race. But what should you pack for such a break?

Nightwear

If you’re planning on spending your evenings snuggled up in front of the fire watching something on the television while sipping a warming mug of cocoa, you’re going to need something cosy to curl up in. Take a look at George at ASDA’s onesies for something cool and stylish, or a pair of comfortable lounge pants and a simple T if onesies aren’t your thing. If you’re staying during the winter months, pack a dressing gown too.

Outdoorwear

If staying in the rural countryside of England is good for one thing, it’s for getting back to nature and enjoying the great outdoors. We have so much on our doorstep that we often miss, and spending a week or a long weekend in a secluded cottage will allow us to appreciate these things like never before. Make sure that you pack plenty of clothing that would be suitable for strolls through woodland, hikes along rugged trails and activities that may also be available near where you’re staying, such as caving, mountain biking and hiking.

Remember that UK weather can never be guaranteed and regardless of when you travel, warm layers are essential. A pair of wellies wouldn’t go amiss, either!

Cardigans and Jumpers

Plenty of layers will help to keep the chill at bay on particularly cold nights. You may be more susceptible to cold if you’re staying in the middle of nowhere, especially if where you’re staying doesn’t have double glazing, or has tiled floors. Pack several cardigans or jumpers so that you can wrap up warm if you’re a little chilly during the evenings.

Walking Shoes

If you’re heading out into the countryside, you’re going to need a decent pair of walking boots or shoes so that you can stay supported and comfortable. Walking and hiking trails can be very jagged, across varied terrain, so don’t assume that any old pair of shoes will do, because they probably won’t.

Entertainment

What you take to keep yourself amused will depend on what facilities are provided in your chosen retreat. Does it have TV? Or Wi-Fi? A DVD player? Whatever you take, make sure you have plenty to keep you occupied during the downtime that should come as standard in a relaxing break away.

You don’t have to pack a lot for a UK break so don’t think about packing everything but the kitchen sink. Comfortable clothes and plenty of layers for your outdoors adventures should be all you require.
