Cropped Courage

I find myself in a predicament that I haven’t been in in quite awhile. Which outfit do I want to post today? It’s been awhile since I’ve had different ones to choose from. There are two things to blame for me being so “ahead” - the first is Lily and her wonderful encouragement and willingness to snap photos whenever I ask (and often when I don’t). And secondly, that which has made spending time outside bearable for both of us: this glorious thing we call the sun. It’s been a stranger to Grand Rapids for far too long and I all I want is to bask in windows or be outdoors. I was talking to a friend who lives in Los Angeles the other day while standing outside a coffeeshop (of course) and a half hour later, she remembered I was still standing outside. Her response was to apologize that I had been subjected to 45 degree weather for that long but, in fact, it was nothing to apologize for.

The spring season is always such a revival. The past few days I’ve been listening to upbeat music, taking the long way home, unzipping my coat, and embracing this time of the year. It feels like hope. And today, we celebrate with a crop top. This look is similar to one that I wore in Nashville and is actually a direct replication of what I wore one night in Los Angeles. I had just received these twills from Jigsaw London that day and couldn’t wait to wear them.

To me, this look represents a lot. With the exception of a swimsuit, I don’t think I’ve ever worn an outfit that showed this much of my midriff. First of all, I never had the courage to, and I know my father would never (and I’m sure still won’t) approve. I met up with a friend at an oyster bar in Silver Lake, which I intentionally chose because I had never had an oyster before, and our conversation led me to say many things I thought I would never say. I guess what I’m getting at is that this belly-bearing look signifies a bravery I’ve recently discovered … So here’s to belly buttons, trying new foods, and making courageous plans. It’s going to be one heck of a season.
