Digital Citizens is working to make the Internet safer for all users, especially those who are most vulnerable to online criminals and predators—children and seniors.

Over the past two years, the team at Digital Citizens have explored different types of online threats, from identity theft and malware to illegal prescription drugs, content abuse, and cyberbullying. They’ve found that almost all online threats share a common thread: lack of respect—for each other, for each other’s content, and even for ourselves.

The Digital Families Survey

The Digital Families project emerged for two key reasons:

Online safety starts at home, and parents, caregivers, and educators are perhaps the single biggest line of defense against the threats that target seniors and children online.
The threats we face online are bigger than any of us can defeat alone. Working together—sharing ideas, raising awareness, and raising our voices to call on Internet companies and civic leaders to do more where they can—not only helps us individually make our families safer, but can help create a safer Internet for everyone.

There is no shortage of information or resources out there to help. In fact, there’s so much that trying to navigate it alone can be overwhelming.

The Digital Families survey is designed to help their team better understand what issues are most important to parents, caregivers, and educators when it comes to family safety online so they can provide access to the tools and resources that will help them the most, as well as help them advocate for meaningful solutions to those challenges.

In addition to helping them better understand how families access the Internet and use it, the survey focuses on key areas of online safety that have consistently shown up as priorities and growing threats during their research:

Identity theft
Content theft
Cyberbullying
Online predators
Illegal drug access

Their goal is to have survey respondents not only share their views, but their ideas as well. The best and most creative solutions will ultimately come by collaborating, sharing and testing ideas, and helping others see what can be done to protect families online individually and as an entire online community.
