Dogs were always around growing up; when I was 5 my parents took us to pick out our 2 daschunds, Oscar and Hildy. As a little girl I ended up choosing the runt of the litter, Hildy, she was petite and so cute but she ended up having some severe health problems that resulted in her death only a few years later which was devastating for us all. Oscar was with us for his whole life, 16 years! A while after he passed we brought home Jack, a black standard poodle; who was with my folks well after I’d moved out on my own. I always lived in apartments and didn't get to have a dog again until now. Sean's canine world ran pretty much the same way so we're just a couple of dog lovers exacting our long withheld passions when it comes to Tayeh.
We've watched Cesar Millan and believe in his philosophy that
“dogs are den animals by nature, and look for spaces in your home that mimic a den." Our breeder also believes in crate training as a make-shift den that provides a safe, secure environment for our pup. Thankfully Tayeh took to it straight away and sleeps right through the night, without a single peep :) Sit/Down is working out real well, even when the temptation of food is almost too much to handle. haha!
As pack leaders we're trying to establish boundaries for Tayeh; that part is sometimes a challenge. She's in the teen rebellion stage and when she turns on her "
bitch face" I almost perish into a melt of mush cos I'd way rather give her anything she wants but know full well that can't happen so.... we've used a badminton racket to create a barrier that hopefully (and in some cases has already) set up invisible boundaries. Not 100% yet but she knows that when we use the racket to block her from something it means she should not be doing that action and usually settles down - phew!
