NURSERY NOOK

So you'd think of all people, I would have started planning the nursery as soon as we found out we were expecting, but for some reason it took me awhile to get into it. But once the planning began, we realized the room designated as the nursery just wasn't going to fit all the furniture needed, including our daybed {our only guest bed}. In a two bedroom house, the options are limited, so like I do with many of my own clients, I measured and worked out a space plan for each room to decide if we might be making a swap.

When we first moved into our house, we decided to remove the closet in our master bedroom to make it feel more open {here and here}. However, after seeing these renderings and realizing our newly purchased daybed was not going to fit in the room on the right along with a crib and changing table, we decided that the old closet space in our master bedroom might make the perfect little nook for the daybed.

So we swapped rooms and started with what we call "the reading nook". I had already painted the alcove a deep navy blue last year {Loyal Blue by Sherwin Williams}, but we still had to take care of the transition of the white painted wood paneling and the navy blue painted drywall. We decided to frame out the sides and the ceiling with pine boards, staining them to look as though they were old rustic, reclaimed wood boards.
But I'm getting ahead of myself. The first thing we actually did was run to Michael's, buy three ornate gold frames, painted them a high-gloss white and framed some monster art prints we purchased a few years ago.

So back to the pine boards...

We had to notch out the baseboard which was a bit of a challenge since we didn't have the proper tools, but in the end it worked out just fine and we love the finished look.

We hung my DIY Hemp Pendant Light above the frames which casts tree-branch like shadows on the ceiling and walls.

I'm glad we were able to find a home for our daybed. It pulls out into a queen and has two large drawers for storage. I'm not crazy about the bedding, but we will get to that after we finish the rest of the room. The medallion curtains are from Urban Outfitters and look fab with the blue wall.

So that's what one half of the nursery looks like. I'll post the other half later in the week {hopefully} unless he decides to arrive a couple weeks early.
