Adorable Vintage-Themed Family Photo Shoot
Most of the photo shoot submissions that I feature here on Bubby and Bean are fashion editorial style - but when photographer Julie Turner sent over this adorable family shoot featuring vintage-themed clothing, I couldn't refuse. Julie told me that when the family showed up for the shoot, they were dressed 1920's and 1950's era attire, all in a yellow and grey color scheme (my favorite!). She also said that Patrice (the mom) found most of the clothing second hand, but that there were several pieces that she couldn't find, so she sewed them herself. Love that!
I asked Julie to tell me a little more about the shoot from her perspective as the photographer. "Patrice had contacted me after she saw some photographs I took of her friend. She mentioned she wanted to do a vintage styled shoot," she said. "I knew instantly that the Wadsworth Mansion in Middletown, Connecticut would be a perfect fit for what she had in mind. It's a great piece of Middletown's history, and I'd recently photographed the Onyx Moonshine Great Gatsby Ball there... When I saw Patrice and her family dressed to a tee, my heart absolutely melted! Together with Patrice's styling and my flair for vintage photography, we were a perfect match in a perfect setting."
I also wanted to know a little more behind how Patrice came up with idea for the clothing, so I asked her to share her inspiration and how she found the perfect pieces. "I wanted us to do a themed session, so I looked up fashion from the '50s. My husband, Dave, wanted his look to be similar to what we saw in The Great Gatsby, so the '20s for him," she explained. "We decided to merge the looks since they were kind of similar for the men when I was searching online. The boys were easy, just suspenders and messenger hats. I didn't want too many colors since (Julie) mentioned it would look best if we stuck to three. So once my husbands outfit was set, I searched for something for myself that would blend well with his. I found my shirt second hand (as well as Dave's blazer and vest). My daughter already had the dress she wore which worked out perfectly with the colors. I made my skirt because I couldn't find anything else. I searched for second hand dresses that I could make into what I wanted and couldn't find anything. So I purchased fabric and made the skirt with the bow."
