Cinema Style: Dirty Dancing

Dirty Dancing never leaves my Netflix queue, in fact, I watch it at least three times every summer, especially on those weekend nights when the husband is out of town. I am pretty sure I speak proudly for most of my generation that Dirty Dancing is one of the one of the most pivotable movies in our lifetime. To say this movie got me completely obsessed with dancing and Motown is an understatement. My first tape I owned besides “Get in Shape Girl” cassettes was the Dirty Dancing Double deck. My first real crush – I felt just as enchanted by Patrick Swayze as Baby did when she first saw him. Some of my most memorable moments in the movie:

1. When Baby curiously takes a walk on the main grounds – first night at Kellerman’s – post mambo scene, and runs into Billy carrying watermelons. He lets her into the staff house, busts the doors open, and everyone is “dirty dancing” to “Do You Love Me! by The Contours” and the famous retort to Johnny being visibly annoyed by her presence, nervously “I carried a watermelon….“.

2. Oh and then comes Johnny and Penny’s dance solo. It was the sexiest, most amazing thing I had ever seen at the ripe age of 11 years old.

3. Then when Baby and Johnny finally cave into their magnetic attraction in his bungalow, post “lift in the lake” practice scene and she says “I’m scared of everything! I’m scared of what I saw. I’m scared of what I did, of who I am. And most of all, I’m scared of walking out of this room and never feeling the rest of my whole life…. the way I feel when I’m with you!” Queue the sexy dance scene to “Cry to Me”. #goosebumps

4. I’d be remiss to not mention Baby’s fashion transformation from oversized sweater, sweetheart dress wearing daddy’s girl to a bonafide 60′s summer siren in her cropped tops and denim cut offs. Baby’s wardrobe is as in style today as it was in the 60′s, 80′s when they filmed, and today.
