OPI Blush Hour Swatches & Review

Although it’s just been a few days since I last published a post on here, it feels like way longer!

Thanks for your patience with me as I’m in the transition period of getting things organized at my new home.

Today, I have a glittertastic nail polish from the OPI Spotlight on Glitter Collection that you saw me showing in photos and a video on my Instagram - OPI Blush Hour!

This is so full of glitter that it’s definitely for those who love diva-esque bling!

I was wearing this manicure during my move because I really wanted to put this glitter nail polish through the ringer. Underneath, I was wearing the new OPI Glitter Off Base Coat to test the durability of that, too. (I’ll be reviewing that base coat in-depth in an upcoming post!)

It was the perfect opportunity because I was opening boxes and being brutal on my nails and hands. (On any given day, I’m also rough on my hands, since my full-time job requires me to be typing on the keyboard. However, because I took a few days off work to focus on my move and the unpacking process, I was even harder than ever before on my nails and hands. The cuticles around both of my thumbs were completely dry and ravaged, but this is real life!)

So how did this chunky glitter fare? Well, there’s only one way to find out. Come…follow the White Rabbit! *Hop hop hop*

OPI Blush Hour Review

Colour

My eye was drawn to Blush Hour by OPI when I first saw the Spotlight on Glitter Collection. It’s a fun pinkish purple that’s saturated, and I find those shades quite flattering and easy-to-wear.

What I liked about this polish is that there isn’t just a single colour. You can see pink and purple mixed together in this nail-polish magic show!

Finish

Obviously, this is a very chunky, blingy diva of a lacquer with various sizes of glitter! It’s the type that eats top coat (even a thick one) as though it’s been starved for a week and it’s now hitting the all-you-can-eat-in-one-hour buffet!

If you only like smooth nail polishes free of any texture, you should stay away from this beast because it’s very gritty.

I was so surprised, though, that even after using Seche Vite, the grittiness appeared in just minutes! Even if you used a layer of a regular top coat and then Seche Vite, I have a feeling the finish would still have major texture.

This nailphile was prepared to deal with the inevitably challenging glitter removal. I wore the new OPI Glitter Off Base Coat, which OPI advertised as a peelable base coat that makes removing glitter a snap. (I’ll review that in-depth very soon!)

My suggestion to you is that if you wear OPI Blush Hour, wear a peelable base coat or the DIY PVA base coats, or you’ll be scrubbing your poor nails raw with this one.

The interesting thing I also noticed about this polish that I didn’t expect was that the glitter is suspended in a translucent-pink base! That was really cool because it allowed the glitter to shine through more, and it also added something different than just a clear base.

As with any chunky glitter like this, Blush Hour by OPI dried lightning fast. By the time I finished painting the last nail on my second hand, the first finger on my other hand was pretty much already dry.

Application & Formula

Application was tricky with this one because my bottle’s formula was extremely thick, and my thinner was still packed in a box during my move, so I couldn’t fix it.

I had to manipulate the glitter and sometimes use dabbing motions with the brush to get as even of a layer as I could. Also, it was impossible for me to paint a thin coat. The two coats I used were thick.

Normally, if you apply really thick coats of a chunky glitter, you have a higher chance of the lacquer falling off in sheets (i.e. It comes off completely in the shape of a fake nail!). However, despite me being super rough on my nails, the glitter clung to my nails for dear life! (Your manicure mileage could vary, but for me, this was impressive!)

Pros

  • Fun glitter in pink & purple
  • Different sizes of glitter
  • Translucent pink base
  • Dries lightning fast
  • Very durable for a glitter nail polish

Cons

  • Very gritty texture that may not be completely smoothed out with a thick top coat

Final Verdict: 6/10

Although I appreciated how crazy this polish was (seriously, there’s so much going on!), I wasn’t in love with the intense chunky look. Yes, I’m a fan of glitter, but this one seemed to look bumpier on my nails than some others I’ve tried. Also, I had to put in more effort during the application.

What I did enjoy was the fun colour and the translucent-pink base, which was a neat twist.

What’s the chunkiest glitter you ever wore? Have you tried or are you going to try the new OPI Glitter Off Base Coat? Which of the other colours in the OPI Spotlight on Glitter Collection would you like me to review next?
