How to Style a White Shirt-Dress

The white shirt-dress just doesn’t stop giving and giving!

An item that was prevalent in S/S of 2013, it is an item that I blogged about – raving about it’s versatility! And now it’s back!

The same dress, just different styling.

Now it’s items like the shirt-dress that can be dubbed as classics – items that transcend seasons, despite the temperature, and can be worked into an array of styling preferences.

Here’s a few ideas on how you can take your summer shirt-dress and wear it throughout winter…

|| BLACK AND WHITE ||

A shirt-dress is typically white – and the style I’m referring to in this blog is just so. The simplest way to work white into the winter is to add darker hues to it, the darkest or colours being black.

Black removes all traces of summers connotations. It makes items that it is partnered with seem more serious and sophisticated, which is what Winter fashion is all about.

So whether you work a pair of black boots into your style, a black leather jacket or a black pull-over, you’ll be on the right track. It doesn’t take much either, keep the black insert subtle as its influence will be perfectly heavy despite being minimal.

|| SIMPLE SHOES ||

Consider your white shirt-dress as a block in terms of the cut. It’s simple, it’s structured and it defines your legs, not our body. It’s an item that is best suited to those who are confident with their strut and showcasing their long legs (remember long legs can always be created with the pair of a fabulously high heel!)

So when wearing a shirt-dress remember that the focus is going to be placed on your bottom half, making what you wear on your feet of high importance.

This season dictates a dense heel – whether in the form of a boot or pump – so keep this black, high and chunky, and you’ll turn your favourite Summer dress instantly into a winter one!

A black leather jacket will add a rock edge, a sleeveless jacket will touch on a more stylish orientation and a jumper a homely vibe..

One thing to make sure of however, is getting the right cut. Be sure to choose a layering item that doest squish or pull or bunch your dress underneath. You want the boxy nature of the shirt-dress to show through.

Classic wardrobe items make for wonderful transitional garments and keep you from over-cluttering your cupboards with un-needed items.
