DIY Guide: A Snazzy Turband

DIY Guide

In our continuing column, DIY Guide, Wednesdays are our day to bring you a little Do-It-Yourself fashion on the fly. After all, it’s not everyday that you can acquire a new outfit, so why not invent one. This week our guest contributor Monique Robb, from DIY group Leathered Jeans, gives us a new look in the craftiest of ways with her DIY Snazzy Turband.

The “turband” is a headband that mimics the knot effect on a turban and is also a headband. This trendy head gear is customizable, fun, super easy to craft and is sure to make a few heads turn. It’s perfect for a bad hair day, as the broad bands are sure to hide rough edges. Want to look effortlessly stylish? Here’s how! With these easy steps you can try it for yourself.

Items needed:

1. At least 1/8 a yard of fabric

2. Elastic

3. Measuring tape/ruler

4. A pair of scissors

5. Sewing machine/needle and thread

6. A straight pin

Supplies you’ll need.

Step 1.) Cut Fabric. After gathering your items, measure and cut your fabric and elastic following the dimensions listed below (or 4x15in, 4.25x10in and 2x4in for the elastic). You can change the measurements for a thicker or thinner band. You should end up with two large bands of the same size and one small band for the elastic.

Measure and cut fabric.

Step 2.) Sew it lengthwise. Fold each panel of fabric on the non-printed side of the fabric and sew lengthwise along the edge with the machine. Or by hand, using a needle and thread, sew a straight line lengthwise along the edge.

.

Step 3.) Flip inside out. Attach a straight pin to the fabric at one end of your sewn band and ease the pin through the tube, causing the fabric to turn right side out with printed pattern exposed. To make your scrunchie, simply attach the pin to one end of the elastic and ease it through the smallest band.

.

Step 4.) Make the turban knot. Inter-loop your two large bands, creating a knot in the middle (as seen below).

Inter loop the bands.

Step 5.) Attach to the scrunchie. Attach your scrunchie section to each end of the inter-looped bands using a sewing machine or needle and thread.

Sew in the scrunchie.

Step 6.) Tidy up. For a neat finish, cover your raw edges with a folded piece of fabric using a hot glue gun. Voila! Your “turband” is complete. Make sure to share your creations with us at @kingstonstyle on Instagram and/or Facebook at @kingstonstyleja!

Final result.
