DIY Emoji Coasters

While we’re getting used to being parents, I’ve invited a few of my darling blog pals to stop by and share a post or two with you! I’m so grateful for the awesome folks who have been helping out, and today we get to hear from Aileen of At Home In Love. Here she is!

Hi guys! Aileen here from At Home in Love. I’m kind of obsessed with emoji, so it was only a matter of time until I brought some off my phone and into my house. I put this project together with Valentine’s Day in mind, but let’s be honest, these guys would make a fun gift any time of the year!

Materials

  • blank cork coasters (these are from IKEA)
  • acrylic paint
  • varnish
  • paintbrushes
  • paper
  • scissors

Start by making a template for your favorite emoji faces. I don’t have a printer, so I traced the coasters and sketched the faces by hand…but you could make this part way easier on yourself by simply printing the emoji faces. Make sure to size them to the size of your coasters.

Next, paint the coasters yellow, including the edges. While you’re waiting for the paint to dry, cut out your emoji templates. This is the part that takes the longest, but it’s worth taking the time to do it right. Plus, once you have the template made you could crank out a whole bunch of these coasters to give away!

Once your templates are done and the yellow paint is dry, place each template over a coaster and paint in the details.

Wait for all the paint to dry, then give your coasters a coat of varnish. This will give them a shiny, finished look, and protect the acrylic paint from coming up with water.

Once the varnish has dried, your coasters are ready to use! For Valentine’s Day, I think it would be fun to tie a set of these together with a card that reads, “I’ve got heart eyes for you.” Or maybe you could deliver breakfast in bed, and under the mug of coffee would be a coaster with the kissy face emoji! Cute, right? I might just do it…

Thanks Aileen! For more cute DIYs, fun adventures, and inspiration, head over to At Home In Love.
