Austin Empty Bowl Project

Today many Austinites braved the freezing-for-Texas weather by heading out to the 17th Annual Austin Empty Bowl Project. About 4,000 handmade bowls were donated by area artists and students. Each event attendee chose a bowl, then paid a $20 donation (per bowl) which will directly benefit the Kids Cafe, a program of Capital Area Food Bank, and Meals for Kids, a program of Meals on Wheels. Everyone was then treated to soup provided by local restaurants, as well as live music.

When I arrived around 1:45, there were still a ton of bowls from which to choose, so a bit of a nightmare for someone so indecisive. :) The selection at each table kept changing as people would set bowls down as they found others that they preferred. I narrowed my picks to two and ended up going with the more minimalist one. Typical.

At the check-out line, there were $10 commemorative t-shirts available for purchase. There was also a silent auction with celebrity handmade bowls as well as a drawing for a quilt by Nancy Elder, but I missed where those were.

The soup was outside (brrr!) under a tent. About 30 restaurants were providing soups, but since they could only serve several pots at a time, the selection here was also ever-changing. When I got out there, there were a couple pumpkins, tomato basil, pasta fagioli, and chicken soup. I went with Eastside Cafe‘s Creamy Pumpkin, which was aptly named. They must have decided that it was too cold to deal with the washing of the bowls and had paper ones for serving, hence the bowl in a bowl.

I think I could have gotten another serving but was a wimp and left because it was too cold, and good thing because it started to rain when I got to my car. Apparently spending eight years in Baltimore and Cleveland didn’t toughen me up. But now I have a pretty new bowl and my money went towards a good cause!

Go next year if you can!
