International lighting // #LDF13

My third visit to designjunction 2013 was well worth it as I managed to explore the fringe areas of the top floor which I hadn’t managed to see fully.

One company which caught my eye was International Studio, initially because of the stand display which showed me exactly how lighting should be displayed when that is your only product to show, but also this captivating display had a strong purpose to show the variety of different arrangements which the Apollo lighting collection can be combined.

Made from aluminium which is spun, punched and anodised, the Apollo lighting is the creation of two designers, Marc Bell and Robin Grasby who won third prize at the (D3) Contest for young designers in Cologne in 2012. Bell and Grasby graduated from Northumbria University in 2009 and founded their studio in 2011.

Apollo is a modular system of light shades designed to be arranged in layered combination. The four different forms available nest in a multitude of configurations on a standard screw cup lamp holder. The shades are spun 1mm aluminium, and each shape comes as either solid or perforated versions. When the shades are stacked in combination, the stamped perforations enable the light from the bulb to be gradually filtered.
