What’s your Creative Thing?

Happy Wednesday!

I like to think that we are all creative in some way. Our creativity shows up differently whether it’s how we make art, write, create a meal or dance a jig. We all have creativity inside of us. Mr. G never thought he was creative until he met me (he always was) and i asked him to make all kinds of things out of wood. I simply gave him the opportunity to unleash what was inside him all along just waiting to be encouraged. Oh lucky me eh? Anything i can envision on paper he can create out of wood!

Take my little grandson Toby – he’s just 20 months old and has taken to art like you would not believe. He LOVES it – every opportunity he gets he’s creative. Last Friday I went over for a visit and had a St. Patrick’s day craft all ready – 3 hearts glued together to form a Shamrock which is glued to a chopstick. Toby loved getting all messy and painting the Shamrock!

After the craft was over he still wanted to paint – i was about to hot glue the shamrock onto the chopsticks and tried to explain that to the little guy – Toby took the chopsticks from me and proceeded to dip them in paint and use them to paint on a small piece of cardstock. Afterwards Toby was pretty thrilled when i taped his little creations onto the back door which has become the “art wall” .

My 4 year old grandson Sam however really doesn’t like to get all messy and painty – it’s just not his thing. He did indulge me and quickly and very carefully with a sponge brush painted his shamrock then he was done….until i pulled out a few washi tapes from my art caddy and showed him how he could use the little decorative tapes. He loved them – loved the fact that he could decorate without getting dirty. So he proceeded to put tape all over a shoe box.

I made a little game out of it all and began calling him the “Washi tape boy”…..and ran after him chanting “Sam is the washi tape boy……Sam is the washi tape boy” about a million times. He was enchanted. Meanwhile his Mom (my daughter-in-law Kathryn) had gone shopping and came back with a bunch of washi tapes from the store. Thanks Kathryn! Sam was delighted and proceeded to try and squirrel several away in his room.

Sam’s creativity shows up differently. He’s very inventive and likes to make up words and experiment with big words and create fanciful stories. I’m sure he’ll be great at creative writing and fashioning inventions just like his Dad (my son) did when he was as a boy.

How does YOUR creativity show up?
