Turkey Planter Restyle

Is it just me, or does Thanksgiving seem to get shafted every year? I start seeing Halloween costumes, candy, and decorations in stores over the summer, and before October is even half-way through, Christmas has taken over. Poor, neglected Thanksgiving. While I do have a few harvest themed decor items for my home, most of my fall decor is a little too Halloween-y to keep up throughout November. I try to be on the lookout for seasonal or holiday decor year round when I thrift. I find that generally speaking, things are more reasonably priced when they’re out of season and are a lot less in demand. I was excited to come across this little turkey planter at Salvation Army last spring for 99 cents. After holding onto him for months, I thought it was time I spruced him up a little for our Thanksgiving table!

I relied on my good old friend spray paint to do the job. I used Rust-o-leum’s Colonial Red, which gave Mr. Turkey a nice, rich, glossy finish. It only took two quick coats (no primer needed).

Much better, huh? Still, this little planter wouldn’t be complete without some festive blooms! I transplanted a kalanchoe plant from the grocery store into my freshly painted planter. I love the effect of the red flowers in the red planter!

To make the rest of my little Thanksgiving motif, set the planter on top of a floral cloth napkin (handmade by my grandmother), and flanked it with some red glass tea light holders (a garage sale find, originally from Pier 1).

I’m so glad to have breathed new life into this thrift store find, and I’m glad to have a new piece of Thanksgiving decor for my home!
