(The Executive Chef is in the kitchen. On the table, there are two slices of bread, mayonnaise, mustard, two slices of ham, a slice of cheese, lettuce, sliced tomatos, and a knife. The Assistant Chef enters)

ASSISTANT CHEF: Good morning.

EXECUTIVE CHEF: Hi! Are you my new assistant?

ASSISTANT CHEF: Yes, I am.

EXECUTIVE CHEF: Welcome to Mariana’s Restaurant. What’s your name?

ASSISTANT CHEF: My name is Mariana Rivas. And yours?

EXECUTIVE CHEF: Wow! What a coincidence! My name is Mariana, just like yours.

ASSISTANT CHEF: Nice to meet you.

EXECUTIVE CHEF: As you know, today is your first day working with me. So, I’ll show you how to make something very easy.

ASSISTANT CHEF: Excuse me, can I make a suggestion?

EXECUTIVE CHEF: Yeah, yeah, go ahead!

ASSISTANT CHEF: Can we start by making a sandwich?

EXECUTIVE CHEF: That’s a great idea! The sandwich is a very simple kind of food to make, but it has a great story. Have you heard about it?

ASSISTANT CHEF: No, I haven’t.

EXECUTIVE CHEF: Many years ago the word sandwich was born in London, when an English nobleman, John Montagu, was too busy playing cards all day long. The legend goes that he ordered a waiter, to bring him roast beef between two slices of bread. That way he was able to continue playing cards.

ASSISTANT CHEF: Wow! What an interesting story. Well, can we start preparing the sandwich?

EXECUTIVE CHEF: Sure! First, we need two slices of bread. Then, we put mustard on the bottom slice of bread ,and mayonnaise on the top slice. Next, we add two slices of thin ham, a slice of cheese, a few leaves of lettuce, one or two slices of tomatoes, and we lay the slice of bread with mustard on top of the sandwich. Finally, we slice the sandwich diagonally, and use sandwich toothpicks to hold the sandwich halves together. Now the ham sandwich is completed!

ASSISTANT CHEF: Great!

EXECUTIVE CHEF: Do you have any questions?

ASSISTANT CHEF: Can we serve the sandwich with potato chips?

EXECUTIVE CHEF: Of course, and a drink of your choice. How about if we eat it now?

ASSISTANT CHEF: Yes!

(They take half a sandwich and eat it)

EXECUTIVE CHEF AND ASSISTANT CHEF: Delicious!
