Learning Experiences

Today I popped over to check on my blog to discover it showed me this:

Visitors to this blog obviously recognize that this is not jacquiesevers.com. It was a shock. Alas, so far, research and investigation hasn't proved particularly fruitful on regaining control of my beloved domain. What happened? Well, mysteriously a company in Japan secured control of the account used to host the domain, and so far, I haven't managed to get it back. As it turns out, when someone else gets control of an account, it can be quite hard to get it back again, even when it is clearly your name and original purchasing information tied to it.

While that project is ongoing, and could take some time to work out, I have moved my blog back to jacquiesevers.blogspot.com as a short term measure.

Frustrations like this are rarely without a lesson.

While I'm in the midst of being on hold with various companies in far off reaches of the world, and chatting with my credit card company about actions I can take, I thought I'd pop in here and update this blog on the topic because after all, it is these troubleshooting instances that are part of life when you work on the web. The lessons here for me so far have been:

Log into accounts you don't use often and update contact information.
Keeping records going back 7 years, is maybe not a bad idea after all.

Other thoughts:

Why am I paying for a custom domain anyhow? I don't host my own site, does it really make a difference?

So now what? Only time, numerous phone calls, and a dozen or so email exchanges will tell. Meantime, if you could update your bookmarks to jacquiesevers.blogspot.com, that'd be great.
