Creative Confidential: Interview with Runa Anzai

Meet Runa Anzai. A student at University of the Arts London: London College of Fashion, studying her foundation course: International Preparation for Fashion: Fashion Media and Communication pathway.

N: So, just introduce yourself a little bit. R: I'm Runa from Japan, I'm 18, I'm doing fashion media and communication in my foundation course at London College of Fashion.
N: What made you choose the course? R: Oh, well the interviewer chose this course for me. Coz she said this course would help me to understand fashion more deeply, and it was true, I understand fashion more deeply right now and, um.. I'm starting to get what pathway I want to be in for the future. So it's been really helpful for me.
N: Oh I see! So what are your aspirations? R: Umm..fashion magazines! Definitely! Because when I was like, 12, I started reading fashion magazines and it was..such..such a wonderful time for me to read those magazines, knowing about fashion designers. So, that's what I really want to do in the future, to create fashion magazines and to deliver it to girls who are interested in fashion.

N: So are you saying you want to create your OWN magazine? R: Yeah! Hopefully! N: Like your own brand? R: Maybe like a zine. I'd like to direct my own magazine, it doesn't have to be big, but just something I really like or admire.
N: With that being said, before you create your own magazine. What is the magazine that you would like to work for? R: I would love to work for Conde Nast: Vogue, also I really want to try like...um..try to go into magazines such as i-D magazine, Dazed and Confused, you know some artistic ones! Coz like, I read them more often than Vogue, since they put lots of articles about art, culture, sometimes a little bit about politics, and I find it really interesting.
N: What made you choose London College of Fashion? R: Well...because it's London College of Fashion!!! Also, it's in London. Some people say even if you don't do anything in London, if you stay there for a year you get so many inspirations. So like, studying at LCF and living in London visiting museums and knowing lots of people means A LOT to me. Because, I come from Japan, it's a totally different environment. So..it's really an inspirational college.
N: Cool, so what are your favourite things to do in London as a student? R: Mm as a student umm I love shopping and I love visiting museums and galleries and I love seeing musical theatres and ballet. They are really cheap, for example, musical theatres are almost free. So it's so kind for students!

N: Cool!! I know you like to eat too, so tell me your favourite places to eat! R: Uhh! I love Burger and Lobster, and Eat Tokyo! Hahaha where we always go! N: Does it remind you of home? R: Yeah! It smells like Tokyo.
N: Wow, cool! With that being said, do you miss home a lot? R: I used to miss home a lot, but I like England as much as I love Tokyo. N: Why's that? R: Because, umm....for about 3 years I live in England, so I spent more time in England than Tokyo so I feel that London is my home right now. I love Tokyo though! But it's getting...it's.....I feel like I'm home in London. Surprising because I used to miss home a lot when I cam here at 15, I don't know what made me change~Ohhhh I think it's because I love this college so much!
N: I see, so umm you said you liked shopping, SO I'm gonna ask you: What are your favourite shops to shop at for your clothes? R: For my clothes hmm I used to shop a lot at Topshop and Zara but I'm shifting towards Urban Outfitters a little bit. So I buy jackets and dresses at Urban Outfitters. I buy basic ones from UniQlo cuz they are cheap, really good quality, and it reminds me of home..it's a Japanese brand and I've been wearing them since I was 2 or 3 so I have loyalty to that brand. I buy accessories from random places like Magma, Urban Outfitters, Topshop..I don't really decide particular brands but Urban Outfitters and UniQlo are the favourite brands for me.

N: Referring back to the course you are taking, what do you like/not like about it? R: (Long Pause) Firstly, I found it a little bit..strange because it's only for international people and there are no British people in this course, even though LCF is in London. BUT since I started my specialism pathway which was Fashion Media and Communication, I began feeling more interested in this course. I started finding it really useful because it was more focused on what we wanted to do. So, from the SECOND TERM I think it was good, and I hope it continues to be good in the next term where we are doing our final project.. N: Oh yes...the final project
N: So, if you were to go back in time, what would you have prepared more before coming to London? R: Umm..I definitely think I should have done more research into more contemporary art and photography. I used to look at lots of historical photographies and arts before I come to London when we were doing A levels, but, at London College of Fashion it's really different. We have to follow the trends, follow what's popular in the industry RIGHT NOW not just looking and learning about historical arts and photography. So I think I really, I definitely should have researched more into contemporary art.
N: What BA Hons course do you want to go on to do? R: Fashion photography or Creative Direction for Fashion. I'm still considering both.
N: What advice would you give students who are not only studying in London, but also possibly going into International Preparation for Fashion at LCF? R: Hmmm N: -And who want to do Fashion Media & Communication R: Everyone says this but you should definitely BLOG, or use tumblr or twitter. Use social network sites and learn how they work. Make lots of friends online that would definitely help you when you do your project, and yeah! That's my advice.
N: Random question: What's the most interesting thing that has happened to you in London? R: It was like 2 years ago, but I met Alexa Chung in Soho! N: Wow R: That was the most interesting- N: Did you take a picture with her? R: No..We just like, um..crossed. She suddenly appeared in front of me and she was like the skinniest person I had seen on the earth. It was the most exciting thing for me in London, and exciting things happen here all the time. London is really attractive, and lots of different things are happening in London so I never get bored of it.
N: Where can people find you on the social network? R: I'm on twitter and I'm on tumblr
N: Thank you Runa! :)
