NYFW: Nicholas K Fall 2014

Nicholas K new Fall 2014 collection “Gaumy” was inspired by the dark, cold, mysterious world depicted in the photo series Men at Sea by French photographer and filmmaker Jean Gaumy. As Nicholas explains, “The documented voyages by Gaumy between 1984 and 1998 tell a story of struggles of deepsea fisherman in a heroic tone. The visual aspect lets us appreciate the struggle between human and nature, mind and body.”

Reflecting a sense of cold isolation and life at sea, the collection includes a dark color palette of navy Atlantic blue, midnight black, charcoal grey, burgundy, cream and an ocean abstract print. Silhouettes are slouchy yet sophisticated, reflecting the layered, natural ease with an edge that is the brand’s signature.

Creamy handknit cable sweaters are worn with slouchy pants tucked into boots, or rolled up leather fisherman shorts over leggings, with high collar buckle jackets and quilted, hooded parkas. Known for their multi-functional knits and leathers, the Kunz’ deliver new styles with double zippers, multiple pockets and mixed fabrics, such as a cable knit with leather sleeves and denim detailing, sometimes worn with wide leg trousers or wrap around leggings. The collection is styled with handknit fisherman hats with leather straps and industrial fisherman boots with detailing such as nautical knots and handmade rope jewelry.
