Conquering the Unknown

We absolutely love when you guys write into us – it is so lovely to hear how the blog has given you encouragement or made you think about your goals. Lately, we’ve been receiving a lot of notes with a similar theme – getting the courage to conquer the unknown.

Whether you’re just in high school and have been offered your first internship or you are ready to look for a new job but don’t know where to start, jumping in feet first can feel intimidating and scary. I have always been one to embrace change, but being a type A personality, it didn’t come without questions or fears – especially if I didn’t have any confidence in the outcome. I can’t tell you how many times I almost talked myself out of skipping an interview or turning around when I reached the door on my first day. We all have those feelings, but that just mean’s we’re about to step out of our comfort zone and into something great.

However, there are a few things you can do for yourself to make the unknown a little less “unknown…”

If you have any questions, just ask and observe - If you’re starting a new job, ask HR or your company contact what you should prep for on the first day. Get a feel for the culture and community of the office during your interviews or contract signing as well. It’s okay to ask “silly” questions like what time people usually come in for work or what the dress code is like. You need to know!

Do your research - One of our favorite pieces of advice. Search for potential colleagues on LinkedIn or spend time on the company webpage to get a feel for the goals of the business. You should feel like you know the place before you walk in the door.

Make yourself comfortable – Bring money for lunch and a sweater in case the AC is cranked up. Bring a notebook, your cell phone charger, and a couple extra pens. Don’t leave any reasons for the potential to get cranky or distracted. It’s time for your A-game.

Pump up your confidence – Starting somewhere new can be a real confidence shaker, since you’re pretty much starting at square one and have a whole new set of humans to impress. The day before you start, imagine yourself being friendly and introducing yourself to everyone. You have a strong handshake and a great smile. Then, on your first day, go out and do it! If you picture the nerve-wrecking event with a positive outcome, you’re more likely to go in with a plan and a positive attitude.
