Review + Swatches: Maybelline Intense Velvet Lip Crayon - Minimalist

Minimalist. Possibly one of the worlds hardest words to say! This is definitely not hard to wear though! I've been hearing lots of talk of this new lip pencil in the beauty word recently, especially of the stunning red shade (which I am half tempted to purchase!). I've also heard that this is a dupe for the NARS Lip Pencils - but as usual I haven't tried the more expensive versions so I can't really comment on whether they are or not!
// var _gaq = _gaq || (); _gaq.push(('_setAccount', 'UA-37824282-1')); _gaq.push(('_trackPageview')); (function() { var ga = document.createElement('script'); ga.type = 'text/javascript'; ga.async = true; ga.src = ('https:' == document.location.protocol ? 'https://ssl' : 'http://www') '.google-analytics.com/ga.js'; var s = document.getElementsByTagName('script')(0); s.parentNode.insertBefore(ga, s); })(); //
As always I've included a summary at the end :)

The Basics
For some reason I think these look a little old school. I think it's because the packaging is simple and not complicated or elaborate. It's a wooden pencil, so yes it does require sharpening. I'm not sure how I feel about this, but it is what it is. The pencil is shorter, yet stubbier than a lip liner, however I can't find any information about how much product you get inside. There is however an impressive 9 shades available, which considering this is a new release, is pretty good! This is priced at £4.99 and available from Boots & Superdrug.

The Formula
If you gravitate more towards the longer lasting products, instead of the ones that although stunning tend to rub off quicker than you can say 'Love My Lipstick', then this is for you. So, you guessed it, this is long-lasting. Well, ish! I find with light eating/drinking this lasts around 4 hours. It has quite a hard and waxy texture to it, which certainly won't be something everyone agrees with. I didn't at first, but once I realised how long it lasts and how light it feels on the lips it grew on me! The scent however hasn't, it does smell waxy!

Colour & Pigmentation
I took the boring route and have gone with a pretty standard and everyday shade. I seem to be wearing more and more natural shades these days. I don't know what's happened to my bright colour loving self - it must be hibernating! Anyway we're getting distracted here, I'm supposed to be telling you what type of shade this is! It's quite a pinky nude pink, with yellowy undertones. It doesn't wash out my pale skin and even includes some teeny tiny silver glitter for the festive feel. It is however mainly matte and not forgiving on dry lips. Pigmentation is also good - although you will need to press more firmly to get the colour payoff.

The Good - Long lasting - 4 hours, 9 shades available, reasonably priced, simple & practical packaging, not drying.

The Not so Good - Smells waxy, texture is a little stiff and waxy, unforgiving on dry lips

Price & Availability - £4.99, Boots & Superdrug.

What do you prefer - a hard/waxy feel but really long lasting or a silky soft hydrating feel that wears off quickly?
