2014 Toronto Film Festival, Part 1

Things are heating up in Toronto, and the stars are just waiting for us to judge them using references to beloved literary characters.

ELIZABETH BANKS
jacket and pants by Chloé, top by American Apparel, purse and shoes by Jimmy Choo

EFFIE TRINKET FOREVER AND EVER TIL THE DAY I DIE. Elizabeth Banks is the best thing to happen to fashion since dresses with pockets.

AMANDA SEYFRIED
dress by Valentino, shoes by Jimmy Choo

Pardon my French, but j’fucking-adore. The dress (WITH POCKETS, because Amanda Seyfried understands us) is an absolute dream on her, from the lace to the colors to the sleeve length. And those shoes? I’m going to need a few moments to compose myself because I am WEEPING over how fabulous they are.

FELICITY JONES
dress by Armani Privé

This was my red carpet prediction for Cate Blanchett, and I’m drooling over it all over again on Felicity Jones. So simple, yet utterly dramatic, and the slight curve to the shoe strap somehow brings the whole look together.

NAOMI WATTS
jumpsuit by Stella McCartney, purse by Lee Savage, shoes by Rupert Sanderson

Chic, sexy, and perfectly accessorized. Jumpsuits and cut-outs might be ubiquitous trends, but Naomi somehow makes them look fresh and new again.

gown by Antonio Berardi

I think it’s just too much stuff all over her body. She looks like a House banner from Game of Thrones. And not in a good way.

CHLOË MORETZ
dress by Christian Dior

Photo: Michael Tran/FilmMagic

It’s a little bit awkward but overall adorable, kind of like little Ms. Moretz herself. The black patch just seems a little random, but I love the cut-out fabric, the stripes, and the delicious little peep-toes.

CHLOË MORETZ
blazer by Emporio Armani, pants by Saint Laurent, shoes by Christian Louboutin

Aw, shit, look who’s all grown up! I would wear the shit out of that tuxedo jacket and those fucking awesome studded pants. Chloë, congratulations. I officially want to share a closet with you.

HAILEE STEINFELD
dress by Gucci

Photo: George Pimentel/Getty

The other teen queen of red carpet fashion did not disappoint with her buttery-lemon-what-even-is-that-shade-of-yellow shirt-dress. It’s a little cartoon-y without looking childish – a great balance of fun and funky.

dress by Calvin Klein

Like basically everything Calvin Klein makes except hot dudes in underwear, this is boring.

KRISTEN BELL
jumpsuit by Etro

Photo: George Pimentel/WireImage

Best maternity wear ever. It’s weird but funky, but actually is basically just pajamas. A comfort-yet-stylish dressing, Mama Bell!

ABIGAIL SPENCER
gown by Dolce & Gabbana

Photo: Jason Merritt/Getty

Scratch the styling (the makeup doesn’t photograph well, and the hoop earrings are tired) and hem this dress just a bit, and this would have been a home run.

OCTAVIA SPENCER
dress by Tadashi Shoji, purse by Rauwolf

Photo: Alberto E. Rodriguez/Getty

I pity the fool that comes between Octavia Spencer and her prim-and-proper Tadashi Shoji dresses. I’m not sold on the shoes, but everything else is working. And I could see this dress on Kate Middleton in a heartbeat.

ANNA KENDRICK
gown by Kaufmanfranco, purse by Lee Savage

Photo: Alberto E. Rodriguez/Getty

I worship everything this woman does, but this dress is stupidly long on her. And it’s a shame, because it’s doing such a great job of making a very petite woman look statuesque. But you shouldn’t look like you’re standing on top of your gown.

JENNIFER CONNELLY
sweater, pants, and purse by Louis Vuitton

Photo: Michael Buckner/Getty

Yeah, it’s a bit scattered, but that’s sort of why I like it. The pants are an amazing color, the blouse is interesting, and the accessories are quiet but chic, to let the clothes do the talking.

JESSICA CHASTAIN
dress by Christian Dior, shoes by Casadei

Photo: Angela Weiss/WireImage

Cute, but the vaguely piano-esque print makes you look like you’re in an especially cheesy musical revue.

PRIYANKA CHOPRA
gown by Gauri and Nainika

Photo: Alberto E. Rodriguez/Getty

Miles too long, and I’m really heartbroken, because I would have lost my damn mind over how perfect this gown was. If it fit her.

JENNIFER GARNER
gown by Stella McCartney

Photo: Joe Alvarez

Oh my God, you are C-SPAN levels of boring.

KRISTEN WIIG
dress by Suno

Photo: Jason Merritt/Getty

Shy-but-sexy clown.

KATE BECKINSALE
jumpsuit by Azzaro, purse by Lee Savage, shoes by Brian Atwood

Photo: Michael Tran/FilmMagic

She looks like she’s halfway through morphing Professor Slughorn-style into some curtains.

NICOLA PELTZ
top and pants by Calvin Klein, shoes by Saint Laurent

Photo: Jason Kempin/Getty

One day, you’ll look back on those pants and laugh for approximately ten hours. Then you’ll retell the wonderful story of how you got so high during the Toronto Film Festival that you stumbled out of your hotel room in the bellhop’s pants and a headband around your boobs.
