My name is Mesha Coleman. I live in McKinney, TX which is about 30 miles outside of Dallas. I am a mother, a wife, a business owner. an author and a natural girl! My hair journey was inspired by my mini me and I must say I haven’t looked back.
How long have you been natural? I started the natural journey over 6 years ago before it was cool or a huge movement as it is today. I started the journey before there was tons of support or even accepted.

What motivated you to transition? Were you a transitioner or a Big Chopper& why? I had a sweet little 2-year old face looking at me, in a predominately white are asking me “why can’t her hair be like mommy’s or her friends Abigal’s.” I realized at that moment I was her 1st example of beauty and pride. I wouldn’t be straiten her virgin locks anytime soon so the decision was simple…I needed to be more like her not the other way around, so I stopped getting my relaxers and little by little my curls emerged. I didn’t do a BIG chop, I got my ends trimmed and eventual my strait hair was replaced with springy curls! I didn’t feel the need to cut it all off at one time. With a good routine and excellent care for your ends you can transition without the chop.

How would you describe your hair? I call my hair a curly mess…LOL. I love color so I always keep it a sienna color in the winter and more strawberry blond in the summer.

What do you love most about your hair? I enjoy the versatility although I usually where it pulled back. I like being able to straiten it or wear it wild and curly. What has been the most memorable part of your journey?Has it been easy or difficult or both?! I am a low maintenance girl so the natural hair as been a blessing. I don’t have to curl it in the morning, I simply spray it with water fluff and go. If it’s dry or puffy I will add some curly cream or oil to rehydrate the curls. The most memorable moment is seeing my daughter's confidence and acceptance of her curls as beautiful. What were some of your favorite transitioning hairstyles? I wore braids. kinky twist and twist outs until my relaxer was gone. What have your experiences been as a ‘natural?’ Any memorable reactions from family or others? I’m number 7 of 11 children and am usually the first to do many things. My family embraced the new hair and many are now in the process or fully natural. My mom never wanted to relax our hair. I didn’t get my first relaxer until I was in the 11th grade in high school. She was happy to see the return to curls.

What is your hair regimen (including fav products)? To be honesty my favor product is the old school water bottle. That is the first thing i pack and grab. Depending on the day I may or may not need to add any additional products. I usually wash it once a week with macadamia nut shampoo and condition. Then I will add a leave in conditioner. I like mixed chicks and Eden. I then add a curly cream usually Eden. What are some of your favorite natural hair websites? I do not have a favorite. I like to read the articles that I receive on facebook from black hair information and curl centric. The information can be overwhelming and the key to a great regiment is finding what works for you also embracing your hair texture. Anything you want the readers to know? Inspirational words? My prayer for all women is to embrace their God-given unique beauty. We are all different and the differences are what make us beautiful, one of a kind. “Being natural” to me is not having kinky curly or strait hair (because some natural women have strait hair), it’s not a trend or a fashion statement it’s embracing what God gave you and being at Peace with it…even more loving it!
