Why You Shouldn’t Be Blogging…Alone

I’ve been blogging/writing professionally for the past two years. And by professionally I mean this is my only source of income and I am not broke. It was always my intention to move to New York and become a writer. I said it. I moved. I’m here!

But not one person warned me about this life. It’s freaking hard! I tried to warn all the new bloggers…”Don’t do it, Gina!” And don’t get me started on my regular friends. They think I’m a celebrity and my life is amazeballs. Which is mostly true, LOL.

This life is a balancing act. Our blogs are like newborn babies. But they’re babies for like…a good seven years. So you spend every single one of those years trying to figure out what she will look like, how she will dress, what you’re going to do to celebrate her birthdays, will she be the popular kid and ultimately will she one day grow up, get a job and earn her keep in your household.

I think along the way every blogger has had moments where you want to completely give up and that metaphor of being a good mother to your baby blog no longer matters. There’s only been a few bloggers who have made it through year one. You know the year where Google Adsense is your only source of blogging income and you are blogging once a week from your 9-5 job all while desperately hiding that open Internet tab from your nosey boss.

Insert my good girlfriends, my blogger boos, my boo-thangs, my crew (I have so many names for them) Christen and Kela.

The picture above truly displays how much I love these chicks. I met them both on social media and I’m so grateful to have them.

Christen and I met on Twitter and then we finally pow wowed at NYFW back in 2009 (I think). She’s been my blogging buddy the longest. The first event I hosted was a collaboration with Christen.

She is a diva in every sense of the word. But in a very good way. Whenever I am with her I just want to wear my sequins skirt, some popping red lipstick and go dancing to the ratchet sounds of Young Jeezy. She checks my ego when needed, but will quickly FaceTime me when my text messages scream that I need a hug. I’m happy to be a part of her ministry, LOL.

Kela is my new boo. I’ve only known her for a little over a year. I think I found her on Instagram. She’s my personal stylist. Whenever I am questioning what I should wear I text Kela a picture and she’s all like…”Those look really mature, I don’t hate them but…”

Your real friends will tell you not to buy those ugly shoes.

I knew we’d be friends when she politely handed me a tissue as I bubble-snot cried while watching “The Best Man Holiday.”

The last two years without my mother have been beyond painful, annoying, sad, disruptive, emotional and well…it freaking sucks! I wanted to give up blogging a long time ago. I wanted to give up on life and just say never mind this is way too hard. But these two ladies are not having it. They remind me that I am great, I am creative and most importantly I am loved!

I really hope you have a Christen and Kela of your own. 1.) I am not sharing! 2.) Blogging becomes less fun and more of a task when you don’t have people around you who understand your struggles and dreams.

So go get you a Christen and Kela, NOW!

Q: Tell me in the comments section below how you get through blogging?
