Pow! Wow! 2014—Hanasaurusrex Yarn Bomb—The Daughters of Triton
I think it's safe to say, I decided to bring it for Pow! Wow! Hawaii 2014. When Jasper and Amy invited me to participate again this year, I was completely honored, giddy really. But when Amy told me I'd have the entire grounds and building of the Honolulu Museum of Art School building, Linekona, to work with, I was like, "Whaaa?!!" Yes. It took me all of a few seconds to say, "I want to do the columns!" I'd been wanting to yarn bomb columns for several years; although, I had no idea the kind of commitment it would actually take. 1500 hours worth of labor and 200 skeins of yarn later and I was in deep. But then my knitting machine decided not to work with me, which meant the largest pieces had to be hand knit; time and energy I hadn't planned to expend after having already crocheted their hair and tails. Let's just say it was definitely, without a doubt, The Lord protecting my hands, shoulders and back from game changing injury, and not to mention, giving me the strength and energy to get up everyday and face my needles... again.
The entire experience was incredible, though, really amazing. From the pattern writing to the engineering and, of course, the knitting and crochet, I had so much fun with every part of creating them. At home, in California, the Mr. and I made a wire mesh column, which we cut in half so it would fit in the apartment, for me to work off of. It proved to be an invaluable tool in helping me calculate my gauge and desirable proportions. I, seriously, would not have been able to make them without it. And the proof is in the pudding, so to speak. As I started to seam up their backs... I couldn't have asked for a better fit.
The installation process was a dream as well! The staff at Linekona were all amazing. I felt right at home. Working outside on the lanai everyday, meeting and chatting with the instructors, students, and patrons as they would come and go was great! Especially after having been totally consumed by this project for the last 2 months, working at home all day by myself. Having the chance to work outside, in Hawaii, and be around living, breathing, human beings—and awesome beings at that—was nothing short of soul reviving.
And now they are done, finished, pau. It took more than a moment to sink in yesterday. All the dreaming about, planning, plotting, stressing, calculating, engineering, pattern writing, knitting, purling, single and double crocheting, cabling, short rowing, increasing, decreasing, chaining, magic looping, sewing and seaming... are... not done... I'll just be moving on to my next project.
I want to go back tomorrow and take more detailed photos of the stitch work. These were all taken as I was working and the sun was making it hard to photograph them from the back where there are also lovely little details—adding details is my favorite. :D
